Outi Kater Outi is a Finnish designer who has lived for many years in Shetland and in Ireland. She draws inspiration from Nordic and Baltic crafts. Her latest design for us is a yoked sweater using a traditional Finnish colour combination, which is on p8. Caroline Birkett Caroline has a degree in textile design and a postgraduate diploma in knitwear design. Formerly head of design for a luxury knitwear brand, she now produces handknit patterns. Her ‘Celestine’ socks with an elegant herringbone pattern are on p41. Mary Henderson Mary is passionate about traditional Scottish knitting patterns, and is much admired for her intricate Fair Isle designs and delicate lace. Rowan’s Moordale yarn, a sumptuous DK blend of British wool and alpaca, has a palette of 18 warm, rich shades, and these colours have been used to great effect in the new pattern collection, Moordale Accessories. Designers including Georgia Farrell, Martin Storey and Lisa Richardson have created 11 projects, mostly using stranded colourwork, slip stitch patterns and stripes. There’s a long scarf with a mesmerising circle motifs in three colours, and a beret, mittens, cowl and long mitts using Fair Isle-inspired patterns. The lovely ‘Herdwick’ poncho combines twocolour stripes with a deep colourwork border of stylised flowers. Other projects include a garter stripe poncho, a simple textured beanie and cowl, a cosy wrap with a geometric diamond pattern, and a smart shoulder bag worked in a three-colour slip stitch pattern.…

Could you tell us a little bit about yourself? “I live on Uradale Farm in Shetland, where I toggle between farm work, knitwear design, publishing work and my academic work (I teach by video at the Justus Liebig University of Giessen in Germany, but am also affiliated with The University of the Highlands and Islands). I started designing knitwear in 2020, and so far I have published 38 designs.” How would you describe your design style? “I like to combine traditions and techniques. This might be a reflection of my own mixed heritage, as well as the fact that I grew up and have lived in various places in the world. SPECIAL TECHNIQUES GERMAN SHORT ROWS German short-row shaping is worked back and forth to raise the back neckline and improve the fit. On RS: Work to the turning point indicated in the pattern. Turn work. With yarn in front, slip the first stitch from the LH needle purlwise onto the RH needle. “RHIANNON WAS a great queen from Welsh mythology, and this dramatic hap shawl is named in her honour,” explains Kath Andrews. “It uses a traditional hap shawl construction, beginning with the central square, from which stitches are picked up all around to work the two borders. Once these are finished the knitted-on edging is added.” This is the fourth and final instalment of Kath’s knitalong pattern, which began in Issue 207.
