John Arbon’s Annual for 2025 is a real treat, and the 124-page magazine is packed with patterns, puzzles, and insights into life behind the scenes at the British spinning mill. I’m planning a quick knit for a friend who’s expecting a baby next month. I found a lovely sweater pattern called ‘Norton’ designed by Lisa Richardson for Rowan’s Just Baby pattern book back in 2012, which appeared in an old Simply Knitting supplement (issue 159). I’m using random balls of DK yarn from my stash, a bit of a mix-and-match from different brands but I think it’ll work well together. LACE FANS will enjoy knitting this intricate shawl design by Anniken Allis. VIKKEL BRAIDS, also known as Estonian or lateral braids, are decorative, chain-like braids which run across the knitted fabric. They lie relatively flat – unlike the more elaborate Latvian braid – and can be worked in a single colour to add texture, or in a contrasting colour to the main fabric. Vikkel braids are a lovely way to frame a section of stranded colourwork, or to separate a ribbed sock or mitten cuff from the main fabric. They can be worked in the round, or across a flat piece of knitting. “RICHLY PATTERNED colourwork sweaters have a long history in the Nordic countries, and in more recent times cardigans have also been knitted using the same technique,” says Outi Kater. “This Nordic style loose-fitting cardigan is knitted in the round, using steeks at the arm and front openings.
