Being a stay-at-home dad was great — more time with the kids, with the freedom to garden, make retaining walls, and give the little ones a bit of ‘hands on’ experience in the great outdoors. Terry Dalton’s shed is very large. It’s as wide as a small English cathedral but not quite as long. It has a distinctly ecclesiastical feel, with its multiplicity of long and very deep laminated-ply beams arching across the considerable width of the building, high above the smooth concrete floor. Light shines through the bottles in front of the high clerestory windows as if through stained glass. Like an ancient cathedral, the barn has begun to attract groups of supplicants. Dear Shed, Here is my 79-year-old dad’s amazing pub, The Brewer’s Arms, located in the Bay of Plenty. Initially a shed, he fitted it out, built the bar, seats, tables, installed a chiller, and even painted the sign himself. My brother and dad have crafted brewing kettles, and dad has developed a huge catalogue of tasty home-brewed beers, which his family and friends enjoy. He has a brewing room and grain room out the back, where he makes beers from the finest hops and grains. He has shared recipes with a few commercial entities, as his beers are so good. The train rattles around the track that loops and reloops through eight tunnels A toot and a whistle away from Castlecliff Beach, Whanganui, a mini train track loops the loop behind a high fence. On a 750m2 (50x15m) property, Ian Jones plays trains with groups of adults, children, and passers-by that recently included folk from the census. “Hop on board!” Ian invites as he gets into the first wagon, from which he operates the locomotive. The enthusiasts who crowded around the exhibits at the Ellerslie Event Centre on 23–24 September were treated to examples of superlative craftsmanship over a wide range of hunting, kitchen, and utility knives, with swords and axes adding a distinctive edge. I am in the final stages of finishing my shed. The enclosure is almost done, and I am awaiting the roofers to do their thing. I would do it myself but at my age the prospect of working at height is less appealing. I just don’t bounce as well as I might have 10 years or so ago.
