Jakarta, Indonesia, is the world’s most populous city, with 42 million inhabitants, according to a recent report by the United Nations (UN, a group of 193 countries). Dhaka, Bangladesh, is second with nearly 40 million people, and Tokyo, Japan, is ranked third, with a population of 33 million people. Nine of the top 10 cities are in Asia.
This marks a major change from the last report. That study, issued in 2018, found that Jakarta was 33rd, with about 10.5 million people, while Tokyo was first, with about 37.5 million people. The change is due to a recent adjustment in the UN’s methodology, which allowed for more consistent counting of populations across different countries.
