A drawing bought for $30 at an estate sale has been identified as the work of German Renaissance master Albrecht Dürer—and valued at more than $10 million. Boston art collector Clifford Schorer was in a bookstore in 2019 when the owner asked if he’d look at a drawing a friend had bought, titled The Virgin and Child. Schorer was stunned to find that it appeared to be the work of Dürer, who died in 1528. “It’s either the greatest forgery I’ve ever seen or a masterpiece,” he told the buyer. Gas stoves leak significant amounts of methane, even when they’re turned off, a new study has found. Researchers from Stanford University measured emissions of the greenhouse gas from ovens and broilers in 53 homes in California. They found that as much as 1.3 percent of the gas the appliances use leaks into the atmosphere. Some methane escapes during the brief seconds before the pilot light kicks in—stoves with automatic sparkers were slightly faster—and some during cooking. There were more than 94,700 single-family homes and condominiums that were “flipped” in the third quarter of last year, meaning that they were bought at a discount, renovated, and then resold.
