We spend a lot of time and effort on our quilt fronts ‒ the patchwork, the appliqué and the stitchery. But when it comes to the back, sometimes it can be a bit of a rush. Often we use what we have to hand, either to use up fabric; because we have a wide width sheet that could do the job; or to make use of sale fabric that we bought for this very moment – but now is actually not big enough. And sometimes, because we have not thought the whole process through, this can affect our experience in quilting the quilt. To bind or to face... That is the question. Students ask this question all the time. Well, let me share my thoughts on two edge finishing techniques. Binding: The standard answer is binding. Binding works on all types of quilts but is definitely the most common approach for utilitarian quilts in particular. Usually, a cotton strip is folded in half and sewn either to the front or back of the quilt, then folded over the edge and hand-sewn down to finish. More and more I am seeing bindings done completely by machine and there are two main reasons for this: 1. It’s faster. 2. As summer gets into full swing, it’s time for more exuberant blooms to feature in our garden and our quilt. Native to South Africa, the Gerbera is part of the daisy family and is, therefore, also known as an African or a Transvaal daisy. In addition, other names for this flower include the Hilton daisy and the Barberton daisy. Gerberas are available in various hues, such as white, red, orange, yellow, pink, lilac and purple. Blue is the only colour in which Gerberas are not present in their natural form. These colours are often rich and vibrant but can also include softer tones, as in our block this month. BEHIND THE QUILT SIMPLICITY IS KEY “Sometimes the quilts I make are inspired by the simplicity and ease of the process. Like all quilters, I love playing around with fabric, fondling and folding it, but I also love the sewing process and if that process isn’t easy, then things simply do not get made ‒ no matter how much I love the pile of fabrics!
