Summer is slowly creeping closer and I can’t wait for long sunny days and warm evenings. FOLDED PATCHWORK PROJECT BEHIND THE QUILT ASSEMBLING THE FLOCK “This glorious group of assorted birds is brought to life by varying the direction each bird faces and the position of their tails. The placement of each bird also varies – some are higher up in the block, others are lower and some are in a central position. The idea is to create a haphazard feeling of birds flocking together and having a good time! “Each pieced bird is given a softer look by using curved-back edges as well as the usual squares and rectangles. This month’s block features a bunch of red ‘common’ poppies, either facing forward or nodding to the side in a tall flowerpot. Also known as the Flanders Poppy, this flower signifies remembrance, resilience and peace – and has been the symbol of Remembrance Day for over 100 years. Poppy seeds only sprout when the earth around them is disturbed, which is why so many grew on the battlefields of WWI. The distinctive red colour and delicate tissue paper-like blossom of the poppy makes this flower one of our most beloved blooms, even without the added layer of potent symbolism. BEHIND THE QUILT FABRIC FLOWERS BLOOMING “This scrappy quilt block is a traditional block known as Friendship Garden. Perhaps the makers exchanged fabric scraps to create the blocks? The wonderful thing about this quilt is that, as well as the blocks themselves being lovely, a beautiful secondary design appears by joining the blocks. What was once the cream background framing the colourful scraps now becomes the flowers themselves! The dark fabric of the block corners become circles, which are the centres of the flowers. “The quilt blocks are hand sewn, but you can sew them all together by machine if you like, and the borders too. BEHIND THE QUILT SEASONAL LANDSCAPES “This miniature quilt project uses shadow appliqué, where the design shapes are glued in place, a transparent fabric is placed over the design, and it is quilted.
