BEHIND THE QUILT ADD AUTUMNAL SHADES TO YOUR HOME “Even in the darkest months of autumn, when the flowers are gone and even the berries have been nibbled from the trees, my Little Crosses quilt will bring radiant colour and joy to your home. This easy quilt uses every scrap to create a thing of beauty and purpose. The main body of the quilt is made up of dark crosses on light backgrounds then around the edge is a ‘mock border’ of light crosses on dark backgrounds. A narrow border helps to frame everything and the final outer border is made from a fabulous ‘cheater’ cloth I found many years ago and stashed for a rainy autumn day. Introduction Here we are in October with a yearlong project over which we can dream about Christmas! This quilt builds on the Baltimore tradition – where the predominance of red and green on a calico-style background creates a very jolly and bright quilt – and uses lots of scraps, so it’s the perfect opportunity to rummage through your fabric stash! I have given you additional instructions to enable you to buy all the background fabric at the outset and plan your quilt. Mine sits out all the time, so I really needed something that stops unnecessary dust gathering, as dust can be bad for your sewing machine. BEHIND THE QUILT CUSTOMIZE YOUR STOCKING! “Christmas Eve is here and the mice are all extremely excited! Each stocking has a patchwork background on the front, with a lighter toe, heel and cuff. I chose a rich turquoise and lime green to bring to mind branches of pine needles, but they would also look lovely in more traditional colours of navy or red with white cuffs. Appliqué designs fill the body of each stocking, with adorable mice busy swinging from the Christmas tree lights, cuddling teddies and riding the candy train. BEHIND THE QUILT MASTER HALF-SQUARE TRIANGLES! “You have to be a fan of making half-square triangles (HSTs) to make this quilt as there are five-hundred-and-one (501) in the pattern. However, you do make the HSTs in sets of twelve (12) on paper, which avoids endless trimming and means you can make them all in a day if you’re pretty determined. Once the HSTs are all made, the quilt comes together quite quickly, as the assembly of the blocks is a relatively quick piece of work. I had five yards of a directional print for the back of the quilt and decided to use this for the borders, too – so even the borders in this quilt are directional.
