BEHIND THE QUILT MIX AND MATCH PRINTS “Goose in the Pond is a classic quilt block that combines Nine-patches and half-square triangles (HSTs) to create a simple but striking block. In this quilt design, I decided to turn it on point and combine it with cornerstones for a new take on the design. The partial blocks on the sides of the quilt top add additional interest. I chose lighter prints in the centre of the blocks and darker prints in the HSTs to make the patterns stand out more. Introduction This month, you’re being introduced to the first of the main borders, the top border, and you’ll be making the semi-circle edge and adding the vine. I use a method for making bias stems that Karen Styles taught me, which doesn’t involve any tools or an iron – perfect for stitching in a comfy chair when it’s cold outside. Next month, you’ll add the appliqué shapes along the vine using clamshell papers like with block 1. My advice is to mark the block dimensions on the back of your fabric in pencil and to tack a line along all the edges and the vine position. BEHIND THE QUILT A WELCOME WANDERER “For our final cushion in this seasonal series, I have chosen to depict one of the UK’s most exotic-looking birds, the waxwing. These distinctive birds with their punky head crests can often be seen feeding on the berries of trees such as hawthorn or rowan, and here you can see the waxwing pair about to snatch yet another treat. In the years when there isn’t enough food in their breeding grounds of Russia and Scandinavia, we see larger numbers of waxwings migrate to the UK, a movement which is called ‘irruptions’. WAYS TO PLAY WITH THE MAGIC CIRCLE UNITS TO CREATE PATTERNS The bag pattern uses a fairly simple fabric arrangement, but you can make up the units in various ways to create a myriad of kaleidoscopic patterns – making your projects as intricate as you wish. ■ In the bag, two (2) colours have been used for each unit. One (1) for the large circle, the outer frame colour, and one (1) for the centre square colour. The large circle can be cut from a 7in square. New York City-based artist Victoria Findlay Wolfe has garnered an international reputation for her award-winning vibrant and inventive quilts that blend traditional quilting with fine art. “When you’re an inquisitive person you don’t know where your curiosity will take you.
