It is the last issue of 2024. Reading it in black and white, it seems unbelievable, but this year has come and gone in a whiz of gorgeous projects, family and friends’ events, and rather grey and wet weather (at least here in the UK). This issue features the last of the Essential Guides. The incredible Lin Clements is taking a well-deserved break after 10 years writing it. But don’t worry, she will still be popping back to share her wealth of knowledge and talents in the year ahead. BEHIND THE QUILT ROUND AND ROUND “This block is inspired by an old Nancy Cabot block she called ‘Oriental Star’. I loved the pieced octagon centre, so I upsized it and put it into rows, which reminded me of a laundromat full of washing machines. Memory quilts are simply quilts that hold significant recollections for the makers and/or recipients, perhaps celebrating the life of a loved one, preserving family history, or marking an important event or milestone. The materials, methods and design are all personal choices, so whatever is meaningful goes. However, often people consider a memory quilt to be one made from personal items of clothing that have sentimental value. As well as being a wonderful way to use hard-to-part-with clothing to capture heartfelt memories in a practical and tactile keepsake, repurposing fabrics in this way is environmentally friendly, too. BEHIND THE QUILT AIM FOR THE STARS “Sometimes the design of a quilt can be inspired by the fabrics we have chosen to work with. In this case, I was using a Moda Fabrics line by April Rosenthal called Starry Sky and I wanted to design something that reminded me of starry skies, so I started to play with the idea of moons and stars interlinked. The construction of this quilt is not for the fainthearted. There are curved seams and Y-seams throughout the design, although once you have mastered each of these, you are repeating the same techniques. BEHIND THE QUILT PIECE OF HISTORY “This quilt is a great way to show off the beautiful range of fabric from Liberty. The Churn Dash block originates from the 1800s and was given this name as it resembles a traditional butter churn. It’s a versatile block that is used in both traditional and modern quilts. I have set my 6in blocks ‘on point’ in the centre set with triangles cut in a way that keeps the straight grain on the outer edge. This allows for less stretch before adding the borders. BEHIND THE QUILT MAKE IT BLOOM “I’m into very clear, jewel-like colours at the moment and I enjoyed using these lovely limes to really capture the energy of spring. It’s perfect for popping your feet up while looking out into the garden and seeing your own bulbs coming into bloom. The cover is graduated from a deep clear green up to a lovely light green on the top, teaming with spring flora and quilted to finish. It slips over the existing cover, tightening with elastic on the bottom and could easily be adapted to fit another footstool base. Introduction There are theories that it is widely assumed that the lyric from this popular Christmas carol refers to docile Faverolles, a French breed of chicken that is a favourite with young children because they make good pets. Whilst I have never owned any French hens, we had chickens and ducks roaming in our garden for over 10 years. One of the most characterful was Buffy the Newt Slayer. Sadly, we lost Buffy in broad daylight to the fox. But every cloud has a silver lining, and you will be pleased to hear that the population of common newts has recovered and thriving in our garden!
