MAKING CUSHIONS FROM BLOCKS “Often, we make a block just for the fun of it – to learn a technique or to play with a new collection of fabrics. Although we may start with the casual approach of ‘this is just a sample’, sometimes it’s made with a definite purpose as a gift for someone. BEHIND THE QUILT STAR OF THE SHOW “This quilt was displayed at the Festival of Quilts in 2022 but began life many years ago when we were on holiday near the beach in Sussex visiting my husband’s family. While my young son, then still having afternoon sleeps, slumbered, I stitched the 1¼in fabric squares together into rows and then a block to make the central bumblebee. The central bee design was inspired by cross stitch patterns, like pixelations. I took my grid paper and pencils and drew a bumblebee, then I chose the fabrics to complete the design.
