BEHIND THE QUILT SEEDS OF GRATITUDE “‘Harvest Home’ was inspired by the arable fields that surround our garden and a vintage rug I saw on Pinterest. Its chevron motif, representing heads of wheat, was my starting point and, for a long time, I just had sheaves of wheat alternated with barns – which would make a lovely quilt – but the soundtrack of harvest time around here is the hum of tractors working away all hours of the day and night to beat the weather, so I just had to add those too. “The quilt’s name is taken from a favourite harvest festival hymn that I’m sure we all remember singing: “Come, ye thankful people, come, Raise the song of harvest home! BEHIND THE FRUITS HARVEST TIME “For the coming autumn season, I’ve chosen strawberries and a pear. The pear is made in a similar way to the apple described in Issue 125 and includes a stalk and leaf. Making a strawberry is great fun. To mimic the serrated-edged leaf of a strawberry, I’ve used felt. I’ve continued the theme of using different fabrics for fruits that are constructed in sections, such as the pear. The pear shown uses chartreuse-coloured fabrics, but you could select darker greens to mimic a Conference pear or choose fabrics with pinkish tones for a Comice pear. The strawberries are very easy to make – quite addictive actually! I’ve made them in juicy reds and scarlets, but you could make a whole bowlful in various shades. A…

Introduction “The last year has flown, and we are on block 12 already. I really hope that you are thoroughly enjoying making this project. Christmas conjures up so many images, traditions, carols and songs and, for me, no Christmas is complete without a bit of Bing Crosby! While I was designing the block, I had his version of The Little Drummer Boy as a very joyful, but somewhat persistent, earworm! Sewing doesn’t get much more summery than this month’s gift – these stunning Hawaiian-style appliqué designs. The set contains four durable plastic templates to trace, cut out and sew into a block for a cushion cover or as a mini quilt. Or, if you’re on a roll, why not just keep on sewing until you have enough for a whole bed-sized quilt? American quilter Emily Bailey is best known for her one-of-kind thrifty quilts that make use of the tiniest of scraps. “The humble fabric strip or leftover crumb – those little bits often discarded – become an opportunity for something beautiful. And by embracing these smaller pieces and the creative freedom they offer, quilters can stretch their fabric budget while creating quilts that reflect their personal style and ingenuity,” she tells us. QUILT MATHS “I’m sure most of us have experienced following the instructions for a quilt or other project only to find that we have lots of fabric left over at the end − fabric that goes in our stash, never to be used again. As a technical editor, I try to give fabric quantities that are sufficient for the project but not excessive. Fabric isn’t cheap and it’s getting more expensive, so being able to manage with 4½yds of fabric for a quilt backing, rather than 5½yds makes a big difference to the total cost of making a quilt.
