Targa INTRODUCED: 1965 1 Fearing the US might outlaw convertibles and not wanting to lose its open-top customers, this was Porsche’s answer. Choosing the ‘Targa’ name after the Sicilian road race, it was trademarked in August 1965 with a preview shown at the IAA in Frankfurt that September. Later developments included hoop air vents added for B-series cars, swapping the original plastic rear screen for a standard glass item in 1972 and dropping the pivoting front quarter lights. The traditional lift-out panel last appeared on the 964, after which a sliding glass panel was employed until the 991’s clever arrangement. The GTS badge wasn’t entirely unfamiliar when Porsche first affixed it to the 911 Carrera’s rump in 2010, nearing the end of 997-generation production. The 904 prototype racer that won the 1964 Targa Florio wore the same initials, and they later found their way onto everything from the four-cylinder 924 to the eight-cylinder 928 and, shortly before the 997, the Cayenne GTS. But when the 911 Carrera 2 GTS arrived in December 2010, it helped bridge the gap between the Carrera S and GT3, and gave the Carrera a three-tier model range for the first time. Dirk Werner doesn’t mince his words: “N24 is the world’s greatest race,” says the Porsche works driver. “For me, nothing else comes close.” Werner will soon join Jörg Bergmeister, Martin Ragginger and Klaus Bachler behind the wheel of the Falken Motorsports 991 GT3 R, which has qualified 18th out of an incredible 155 cars on the grid. A trio of early Targas takes to the public road for real-world testing around Zuffenhausen in the late-1960s. All three cars are carrying registration plates in red text, used at the time for non-registered cars, bearing the ’S’ for the district of Stuttgart. Their fronts heavily concealed, nevertheless there are minor differences identifiable between each model. 2019 RSR revealed Mid-engined works car for new IMSA and WEC campaigns is ‘95 per cent new’ Porsche unveiled its new 911 RSR racer for the 2019/20 season at Goodwood’s Festival of Speed in July. The mid-engined 992 race car is claimed to be 95 per cent new, despite critics claiming it merely looks like an even wider 991. Porsche though says the only unchanged components are the headlights, brake system, clutch, driver’s seat and parts of the suspension. Underneath the skin, Porsche’s new, top-level GT car – ready for works assaults on next year’s IMSA and WEC championships – has undergone “improvements in all areas”, including a new, naturally aspirated, 4.2-litre flat six engine, which produces 515hp depending on the size of the restrictor. Owning a classic 911 presents a paradox, and one that’s mired in complexity. There are differing schools of thought as to the ownership stance you take, based around pillars of rarity, condition and purpose. Throw mileage, use and that trickiest of factors, value, into that mix and the ownership reality might not meet expectations. Porsche has made over one million 911s, though, which means there are enough to go around. When it comes to classic 911s, if you’re looking for something a little ‘out of the ordinary’ then a special edition is your answer. The trouble is, special editions were thin on the ground during the G-series years when compared to the never-ending lineup of special models today. In 1988 though the company released the 3.2 Carrera ‘Commemorative Edition’, released not to celebrate 40 years of Porsche or 25 years of the 911 as you might expect, moreover the successful building of a quarter of a million 911s. The bizarre milestone was celebrated with a model painted in unique Diamond blue metallic with colour-coded Fuchs, an electric sunroof, electric seats, short-shift, sports suspension and luxury carpet. The concept of Porsche using lighter windows in its GT cars to save weight is not new. However, what is a new development in the automotive sector, piloted first on the 991.2 GT3 RS, is borrowing ‘Gorilla Glass’ technology – honed on the screens of smartphones – for ‘thin-film’ windows. This serves up a neat solution which is 40 per cent lighter yet 200 per cent stronger than the glazing previously found within a 911’s window frame. It is also able to block 99 per cent of UV radiation. Perspex rear windows, though they have long been used in motorsport, are no longer deemed ideal for road-based and mass-produced cars such as the GT3 RS due to their low resistance to scratches, which obviously hinders the viewing experience through it…

Far less frequently these days, where more extensive research and dynamic development can be carried out with software simulations, a manufacturer experiments with a radical new idea by building some of the technology into the preceding model. My invite came about while ogling the beautiful ducktail fitted to the rear of a 996 CSR owned by RPM Technik’s commercial director, Darren Anderson. Exquisitely sculpted with consistent, equal gaps to surrounding panels, it’s clearly no mere fiberglass installment. Beneath the ducktail’s Zenith blue hue, faint fissions of stunning carbon fibre weave can be detected. An example of RPM Technik’s second generation of carbon fibre body panels for its CSR line of modified 911s, the revelation gives rise to a discussion on wider use of the material which, in automotive circles, has diversified considerably in the last decade or so. I’m strapped in Porsche’s new 935 in the paddock at Goodwood Festival of Speed. Race suit and helmet on, feigning indifference to the many pointed cameras, I’m trying to look like I do this kind of thing every day. Dr Frank-Steffen Walliser and Andreas Preuninger wander by to have a look. Preuninger leans in and says, laughing: “Ah, our baby. Remember, it’s the only one we’ve currently got.” No pressure then.
