Making my dream drive a reality Dear Sir, I’ve always considered driving to be one of life’s greatest pleasures. It’s the freedom I enjoy most: the ability to be able to go anywhere I like. Obviously, that freedom has had to be relinquished in the midst of these testing, unprecedented times we all find ourselves currently living through. I’m staying at home like I’m sure you are, though it doesn’t help that when I look down into the courtyard I see my 991.1 GT3 waiting patiently for its next spectacular outing. “When we introduced the first GT3 in 1999, it had 360bhp, barely. If someone would’ve told us in ten years there’d be a 4.0 with 500bhp, I would have said, ‘Yeah, come on…’, but technology goes on and on.” That was Porsche GT boss Andreas Preuninger, when we interviewed him at the Geneva Motor Show, 2015, at the 991.1 GT3 RS’s unveiling. Today we’re experiencing that leap first hand with a drive in the first 996.1 GT3 and a comparison with its most recent and extreme descendant, the 991.2 GT3 RS, at Sonoma racetrack near San Francisco. • Although the UK values have been steady over the last couple of years, there was a slightly higher peak in the US and European markets, but they’ve corrected down to a similar level. This is likely to have been because fewer examples of UK C16 spec cars reach the market here. • As with other 911 values, we see condition 4 (fair) examples not reaching the same values on the European market as in the UK or US. • In Hagerty’s opinion, 993 RS values rose significantly in 2014/2015 and have been relatively static over the last three years. Parked next to my 993, the 992 is a big car. A good-looking car too, every angle kind to it, some details a masterclass, like the front for example: the hood’s shut-line continues forward, eating into the front bumper by a centimetre. A minuscule amount on something so big, but it nods to the 911s of old with their curvy wings holding bug-eyed headlamps – this car is pretty much flat nosed, but creates an optical illusion of those early icons. Inside’s just as pretty. Turn off the large telly running half the length of the dash, a control centre for things like the Sports exhaust and navigation, and you are left with a sleek and elegant masterpiece. Porsche factory shuts down Unprecedented move at Zuffenhausen in wake of COVID-19 Wholesale production of Porsche sports cars has ceased for the first time in years after CEO Oliver Blume announced an initial two-week factory shutdown in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic. The measure was put in place on 21 March, before a nationwide order of lockdown was triggered in Germany, which was set to last until 19 April. German chancellor Angela Merkel has said it is too early to be thinking about scaling back such measures, which will have a detrimental effect on when Porsche can resume building cars including the 911. Porsche Supercup goes virtual Digital series for world’s fastest one-make sports car racing competition The Porsche Supercup has reinvented itself for 2020 as it seeks to keep competitors racing during the coronavirus pandemic. Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup Virtual Edition has launched for the new motor racing season, which sees current teams and competitors from the original Supercup 2020 lineup compete online in virtual GT3 Cup race cars. The 2+2 Coupe with a flat six engine flung out the back has demonstrated its legendary abilities by winning on the world’s most famous race circuits and rally stages. But back in 1968 it was about to face an especially tough challenge, one involving a journey of more than 10,000 miles from London to Sydney, Australia. Porsche has announced the production of 3D-printed centers for bucket seats found in its sports cars. Customers can choose between firm, medium or hard comfort layers, which Porsche says lowers weight and improves comfort. “With the 3D-printed bodyform full-bucket seat, we’re once again giving series-production customers the opportunity to experience technology carried over from motorsports,” says Michael Steiner, head of Research and Development. His brand, RWB (which stands for RAUH-Welt Begriff) started life as a small body shop in Chiba-Ken, a region within Greater Tokyo. Nakai’s formative years in automotive culture were spent within the Japanese drift car scene, but the appearance at his body shop of a tired old Porsche soon gave rise to a bold new direction for both Nakai and the 911. HISTORY AND TECH It might have taken Porsche almost 20 years to resurrect the Rennsport badge – affixing it to the 964 – but the 1990s was the decade when the company proved it had got its lightweight mojo back. Unsurprisingly, then, the 993 was the next candidate and the arrival of the RS in 1995 had been keenly anticipated by enthusiasts expecting great things. They weren’t to be disappointed, the new model proving both achingly desirable and rare – the 1,104 examples built was less than half that of its predecessor. Like all car manufacturers, Porsche used carburettors. The early 911 had bespoke Solex units designed for it, but these proved unsatisfactory and were soon replaced by Weber items. Carburettors are the age-old method of combining the petrol-air mixture for combustion engines and work by the suction created by the downward stroke of the pistons, with fuel delivered by a pump usually running off the crankshaft. Cheap and reliable, the drawbacks of the carburettor, essentially a non-pressurised system, are a tendency for fuel starvation under high cornering forces and their inability to provide optimum fuelling at very high RPM.
