Blasting up a North Welsh hillside, it’s hard to find fault in any of the engine configurations found in our three Sapphire blue 991s. As we wind up one wonderfully inviting pass among our stunning scenery, the howl of flat sixes bouncing off the sheer rock face to our right is enough to move even the staunchest of water-cooled doubters. In cannon, each azure rocket launches forward, the sports exhausts adding extra theatre to an already impressive scene. On reflection, though, each powerplant enjoys its pros and cons, with a source of propulsion being perfect for nearly every driver. This is a single, A4-sided piece of paper, from Porsche, which allegedly proves your vehicle as authentic. Or does it? As more and more owners of classic Porsche have sought to attain a COA for their vehicle, there has been much conjecture in recent years as to whether the certificate actually holds any clout. It was early June, and after returning from a tour of Afghanistan I had some spare time on my hands. I decided I wanted to do something fun and adventurous, so before long I was contemplating steering my 1972 911T hot rod on a road trip headed for the south of France. My mission? The engine you’d like fitted to your 991 will determine what brake options are available ‘out the box’, so to speak. Those who opt for the lesser-powered 350hp unit will have the four-piston alloy monobloc calipers fitted with 330mm discs all round, while a prerequisite for the 3.8-litre engine are bigger, six-piston alloy monobloc calipers and larger 340mm discs up front, with the four-piston caliper and 330mm discs at the rear. Calipers on S models are painted red in a nod to the ‘Big Red’ brakes formerly seen on 911 Turbos. Porsche once again broke new ground upon the release of its 991.1 GT3 RS in 2015, its magnesium roof meaning Porsche was the first manufacturer to feature a magnesium body panel on a production sports car. Porsche has used magnesium on its 911 sports car before of course, namely for the crank case on its earliest models in the 1960s but, as we’ll see, the decision to produce external body panels was clearly thought through, and possible thanks to 21st century manufacturing practises. There are many advantages to using magnesium in this way. The alloy is 33 per cent lighter than aluminium, yet boasts a comparable strength-to-weight ratio with the latter. It is for this reason Porsche used magnesium for the 991 Rennsport’s roof, significantly lowering its centre of gravity…

992 GT3 Touring nears global debut Test mule spotted on public roads with only minor camouflage Total 911’s spies have captured a prototype Touring model of the upcoming 992-generation GT3 testing on public roads. The mule, which bears only very minor camouflage, adds fuel to the fire of a possible public debut for the latest-generation GT3 in the coming months. As with the 991-generation GT3 Touring, the 992 prototype features a flatback design with active rear spoiler, mimicking the profile of Carrera equivalents. The wide-bodied mule also boasts telltale centre-lock wheels all round, as well as a revised rear PU with dual centre-exit exhaust and large diffuser, all features of a traditional GT3. As technology progresses, so too does the number of configurable parameters on your 911. PDCC (the active anti-roll system) is only available to specify alongside Porsche Active Suspension Management on Carrera S models. This means it cannot be added to a sports car with passive dampers, but that’s okay, because ultimately you will need the entire package in order to reap the full benefits. The Cabriolet (an unlikely stead to analyse a 911’s handling potential) is the only car on test with the passive damper setup. It feels incredibly soft, rolling extensively into the corners. It is a fact that without Peter Schutz, the 911 would be dead – its production was scheduled to cease at the end of the 1981 model year SC. The story of how Schutz broadcast his ambitions to save the 911 on his first day in the job has become the stuff of legend.
