It’s a real privilege to bring you a special issue of this fine magazine, which this month is celebrating 60 years of Porsche’s iconic 911. It really is an incredible milestone: the world itself was a very different place back in 1963, yet through all the social, economic and technological changes witnessed across the generations since, the 911 has remained not just relevant, but highly aspirational to many. The 911 has given a great deal to me – not just professionally, but personally too. Obviously, it’s provided me with a job for the past 11 years, but it’s also gifted the most outstanding friendships from right around the world, and provided some amazing experiences that truly will stay with me forever. Part of the fun of Spotted is finding 911s that we’ve either missed or forgotten about, and this month’s find covers both angles. The Porsche 911 GT2 RS Clubsport 25 was produced in 2021 and that ’25’ means it’s different from the other GT2 RS Clubsport. You may recall that Porsche spun-off a track-only Clubsport version of the standard road-going 991 GT2 RS – if ‘standard’ is a word that can be sensibly applied to it. The steering wheel is often overlooked as a point of connection. Given that it’s the only thing (seat aside) you’ll constantly be in contact with while driving, it’s a bewildering state of affairs. The best Porsche always have the best steering wheels, and that’s very apparent today. It looks sensational for starters, with its slim-holed spokes wearing the name Tactico, a brand I’ve never encountered before. I’m unlikely to ever grasp a Tactico Racing Atelier Viceroy (to give it its full name) again either, as this limited-series wheel, designed by Glen Cordle and dubbed ‘Sung’s Garage edition,’ was built in a series of just 59 examples. Star-studded 911 race makes history Classic Porsche 911s powered by sustainable fuel saw former F1 drivers competing against Porsche racing royalty at Goodwood Goodwood Revival played host to a unique race dedicated to short wheelbase Porsche 911s. The Fordwater Trophy saw 27 1965 911s and three 1964 901s go head-to-head on the fast and flowing 2.4-mile Goodwood track. In fact the shift had begun 10 years earlier with the launch of the Cayenne SUV, reinforced in 2008 by the sleek Panamera saloon that used much of the Cayenne’s running gear. With its combination of electric and petrol V8 traction, the 887hp 918 hypercar was the most powerful Porsche yet. Built for speed Dear Sir, After 60 years of production, there’s still just one generation of 911 that’s best for each enthusiast. For me, that honour clearly rides with the 997.2, particularly the C2S. It’s the last generation of Carrera produced while Porsche was still a family-owned business, and its purity shines brighter than its paint. The car exemplifies the essence of the 911, from its small body design with felt rear engine bias, to its heavenly hydraulic steering and analogue dynamics.
