I’m just back from the most exquisite three weeks in California, where I got to fully indulge in Porsche car culture for the duration of my stay. The region is a hotspot for Neunelfers; however, once again it was the people who really made the adventure an unforgettable experience. While I was amazed at how successful the ‘Porsche Drive’ 911 hire initiative is in LA, which was awash with 992s (in contrast to the rarity, or so it seemed, of 991.2-generation 911s), it was also a real treat to regularly observe air-cooled 911s parked kerbside, and used daily, owing to the good weather. How best to describe Rennsport Reunion? Try four days of sheer Porsche utopia, centred on a legendary racetrack in northern California, delivered in an immersive way to captivate the entire family. Yep, that should do it… The event, now in its seventh edition, is usually held every four years, but this time was put back a year so it could coincide with Porsche’s 75th anniversary celebrations. Thankfully, the wait was well and truly worth it. Some 91,000 fanatics filled Laguna Seca for an action-packed long weekend celebrating Porsche, with a variety of static displays, racing events and on-stage entertainment making this a real family-friendly festival of Porsche. HISTORY & TECH The same model with three states of tune wasn’t new at Porsche. Excluding the twin-cam Carrera, the 356 B was available with 60, 75 or 90PS, the run-out 356C of 1963-65 came with either 75 or 95PS, while the new 911 was the flagship model with 130PS. Besides expanding the appeal of the 911 with a cheaper version, the T also brought cost savings to a Porsche that was always concerned with expenditure. The thermal stresses on this lowest-powered flat six meant that the expensive Biral cylinders could be replaced by cast iron, while lower rotating speeds meant that a cheaper crankshaft without counterweights could be fitted without compromising the bearings. Even if you fill the SUB1000’s 64-litre fuel tank you’ll still be sitting in a car that weighs just under a tonne. This is arguably the most exciting time for 911 enthusiasts: never before has there been such a wide offering of OEM 911s, as well as custom 911s and restomod 911s. Indeed, the amount and variety on offer appears to be growing on almost a monthly basis. A Porsche perspective Dear Sir, Your article in issue 235 reminded me of some photographs that I took a few years ago. These stemmed from my attempt to make a R/C car lookalike of my 996 Turbo. After little thought and hardly any real effort I came up with a pretty crude model of my car mounted on a Tamiya TT-02 chassis (from an RSR that I already had) as featured in the Total 911 article. For the body I used what I think is a Kyosho body that – sort of, from most angles – mainly depicts a 996 Turbo. I cut that about a bit and made it fit the Tamiya chassis. Huntington Beach, California. This surf haven, situated south of Los Angeles, promises “sun, sand, and subtle sophistication,” according to the tourism board. From its introduction in 1964, the 911 has featured a flat six engine cooled by air. This design, which started at 1,991cc, proved unimaginably adaptable and with Porsche’s ingenuity it doubled in capacity and power over three decades while gaining in economy. However, the march of emissions regulations meant that by the late 1980s, the writing was on the wall for the last remaining production air-cooled engine. It was clear that a four-valves-per-cylinder head would be essential to create the more efficient combustion required to both improve performance and economy, and address looming CO2 reduction targets. The annual awards ceremony is a time-honoured ritual at Porsche and a reminder that the company really did make its name through motorsport. Usually held in the third week of December, these days the ceremony is slightly overshadowed by competition from other Porsche evening functions, such as Sound Night and other social media-inspired events. However, 50 years ago when Porsche was still a small company and almost all Porsche racers knew each other, it was the event of the year.
