Herbert Linge’s amazingly varied Porsche career would be unimaginable today. From wartime apprentice to manager of Weissach, via the workshop, development testing, racing and managing Porsche in the US and Europe, and leading a safety crusade in Formula 1. Born in Weissach, where he lived all his life, Herbert was a bright boy and wanted to continue in school. However, his father Karl, who worked in a foundry in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen, couldn’t afford to pay for it. Reluctantly, at 14 Herbert left school and at his father’s suggestion sought work at a company in a smart new building on Zuffenhausen’s Schwieberdinger Straße, which was offering apprenticeships: Dr. Ing. h.c. Porsche community mourns Herbert Linge The passing of the former Porsche racing driver, veteran and visionary has brought renewed interest in Linge’s fascinating career at the company Herbert Linge, Porsche’s former racer and Weissach Development Centre operations manager, passed away on 5 January 2024, aged 95. The company cites him as an integral part of its history. As one of the first Porsche apprentices in the 1950s, Herbert was instrumental in establishing its famous proving ground at Weissach after suggesting to Ferry Porsche that a site near his hometown and neighbouring Flacht should be used for testing and development. Normally an exciting battle between several manufacturers, that year it was a disappointingly one-sided affair as Porsche 908/2s filled the first five places. Victors were Brian Redman and Jo Siffert, the latter seen here between team manager Rico Steinemann and deputy technical director Helmuth Bott. The man on the right of the picture is Peter Falk. A message from Tony Hatter Dear Sir, I was very honoured and flattered to see the article on the 30 years of 993 and to read the article ‘My Life at Porsche’. However, as much as I enjoyed the latter piece I have to put a few things into context. Any design project at Porsche was, and is, a team effort. The opening double title spread is graphically very well done but I would not project myself as the sole 993 creator. I think my Schwäbisch friends would not be very happy with suggesting that their dialect was a mixture of Hessisch and Bayerisch (please note the spelling), even though in my ramblings I might have insinuated that. HISTORY & TECH BMW’s 2002 Turbo was the first turbocharged European production car, made to homologate the championship-winning car of a couple of seasons earlier. It was witnessing the 270bhp 2002T pulling away from naturally aspirated 911s that inspired Ernst Fuhrmann to have Porsche revisit turbocharging. Ernst also saw a blown 911 as a high-performance flagship production model that could hold the fort until the 928 was ready. As an engineer, Ernst also knew that development of the 911 Turbo would be quick.
