The idea of adding extra sustain to a guitar signal has been around since early electric players started toying with sympathetic feedback between amp and guitar, with Jimi Hendrix perhaps being the master of the technique. Indeed, such was the connection between distortion, fuzzboxes and high-volume amps that many pedals, such as the Big Muff, were marketed as ‘sustainers’. With the advent of digital looping, however, it became possible to create infinite loops, although smooth-sounding pads have often been elusive, and many of the best boutique micro-loopers like the Hexe Revolver and MWFX Judder are more used by glitch musicians. Today, we’re putting several units through their paces, from the ubiquitous EBow to the newest challenger, the gorgeous Plus Pedal.
