JOHN DEERE HAS added two new models to its 9000 Series self-propelled forage harvester range. At the heart of the 9500 and 9600 is an all-new, 18-litre John Deere engine producing 700 and 750hp respectively. Literature specialist Gibbard Tractors is holding an open weekend on 2-3 October for collectors of sales brochures, manuals, instruction and parts books. “We held our last open day in early 2020 before the pandemic took hold,” Stuart Gibbard told us. “It was a great success, with many visitors saying that we should make it a regular event for literature collectors to get together and chat about their hobby. My first ride on a Claas combine was when local farmer Mr Clements ran an SF. I was five years old and I remember the excitement of seeing the big machine eating its way around the edge of the spring barley behind our house. Mr Clements encouraged me up on to the platform, at which point my excitement left me! With my back facing away from the header and a firm grip on the safety rail, once around the field was enough for me and I was glad when I was back on terra firma, with dad! Yeovil Railway Centre, in Somerset, held its biggest tractors and trains event ever on Sunday 1 August, writes Joseph Lewis. A total of 28 tractors, 28 Land Rovers and a selection of stationary engines proved a big draw. Despite some heavy showers, the most number of visitors ever seen enjoyed the heritage railway line, steam or diesel, carriage ride down, following Covid-19 guidelines, to the assembled agricultural machinery. Highlights included a 1951 Farmall M, a restored David Brown 780 Selectamatic and three David Brown 90 Series models. One of the vintage highlights was a 1942 Minneapolis-Moline ZTS owned by the Stoodley family. DIFFICULTY RATING In part three regular readers saw me remove and dismantle the hydraulic tipping ram from the trailer chassis, having been a number of years since it was last tipped, due to an excessive oil leak when the ram reached its full length. After draining a lot of water from the ram, it was dismantled and a degree of corrosion had taken hold on the ram shafts, due to the presence of the water. Thankfully it was confined to the shafts, leaving the pistons and bores of the ram undamaged. MEASURING UP With the ram fully dismantled I was able to clean the pistons and carefully remove the old seals. They are each secured by a circlip and steel cup, which were cleaned and put aside ready for reassembly.…

Kivells saw a huge crowd of potential buyers travel to Bulland Farm, Common Moor, Liskeard on Saturday 31 July. The sale was on behalf of Ivor Sanders who has lived and worked in the local community for a lifetime. The sale commenced with 100 smaller lots, followed by the nine tractors that saw considerable interest both in the yard and online. A grade 4 1958 Fordson Dexta raced away to £3,200, with a 1966 Ford pre-Force 3000 close up at £3,000. A Ferguson TE-F 20 was one of three present and went off to a new home in Kent at £2,600, whilst the best of the non-running Ferguson tractors hit £2,200. With a disastrous weather forecast and torrential rain during the Friday night, the sky cleared to brilliant sunshine for this sale, on Saturday 21 August at Oakhampton, Devon. There were 85 lots on offer and a great atmosphere, as every lot was sold. Andrew Lane Ltd. was pleased to be instructed by the Martin family to disperse of John’s collection, following his sad passing. The tractor that created the highest price was a lovely Field-Marshall Series 1 at £10,750. Thanks were expressed to Martin and Sarah Littlejohns for kindly hosting the event at their farm. A talented JCB engineer who amassed a multi-million pound fortune, thanks to his interest in cars, has made a life-changing bequest to a Staffordshire school dedicated to nurturing the engineers of the future. Bill Turnbull spent almost a decade working at JCB as Chief Engineer, helping to develop the company’s first ever mini excavators. He retired in 1995 at the age of 65._ When he died in 2019 aged 88, he left more than £4.2 million in his will thanks to an investment he made more than 50 years earlier in a rare 1937 Bugatti Type 57S – paying just £1,500 for the car. As I write this in September and reflect on what’s happened over the last month on the sales scene, one concludes the market is still going up and up, from modern too old, but if you look hard there are still some bargains about. The big news is that Ford tractors are ‘hot’ at the present time, with an amazing £50,000 paid for an original 1974 Ford 5000 that started its life in Lincolnshire. The tractor, sold on Saturday 28 August at the Euro Auctions Collectors Sale at Castle Irvine, Northern Ireland, had just 10 hours on the clock and was totally immaculate, with some surface rust coming through the paint in places. If you wanted to see a field of classic and vintage wrecks, the place to be was at an online-only sale at Whaley Bridge, Derbyshire, undertaken by Graham Watkins auctioneers. The late owner tried to create a museum of transport, but the local council flatly refused and after years of wrangling it all faded into the bushes. H&H of Cheshire sold the better lots off at its Buxton sale last year and Watkins was left to sort the maze of rust out this summer. The agricultural results were: Fordson Standard N ‘bitsa’ at £950, DB Cropmaster with side mower at £580, Nuffield Universal at £850, Ferguson TE-F 20s at £850 and £560.…

On Sunday 15 August, the David Brown Tractor Club reopened the doors to its museum in Meltham, Yorkshire, for the first time in 18 months. The premises were thronged with visitors and the club shop was almost overwhelmed at times. The food, tea and coffee stands also saw good trade. The event also hosted the Saddleworth Tractor Group’s charity road run, with around 30 machines arriving during the day. Tom Pepper from Dirt & Diesel, Sarah Crabtree from UKTV’s Bangers & Cash television series, and DBTC president, Adam Brown, were also in attendance and spent the day greeting visitors. “Sunday’s open day at the museum was a cracker,” reports the DBTC’s secretary, Roger Brereton. “We had record attendance, shop sales and donations with most of the attendees being family groups.”…

For the UK’s first all-electric dealer of off-road utility vehicles, it was no surprise that Off-Road Electric, of Kidlington in Oxfordshire, opted to stock the Farmtrac FT25G, the agricultural industry’s first fully-electric tractor. DIFFICULTY RATING The journey of our Massey Ferguson 35 began in late 2013, when we acquired it from a local dairy farmer, who had been using it as a scraper in his dairy unit. Prior to its undignified job on the scraper, it had been owned from new by a well-known sheep farmer on the edge of our village, and after his death had been sold in a dispersal sale. Despite its high hours, at over 8,000, it had been kept immaculately and was fitted with an MF 40 loader. During its time on the scraper it developed some engine trouble and had been cast aside upon the arrival of a fresh scraper tractor. DIFFICULTY RATING There are some days when I wish there were more hours in the day, as time to accommodate the various projects on the go can be limited. The skid unit of the tractor is getting nearer to being sprayed, but another project has jumped the queue and taken the time I would have spent furthering the David Brown project. REAR WHEELS & TYRES One aspect of the tractor that hasn’t seen much attention is the rear wheels. They were removed when the skid unit was positioned to prepare for and to do the paint spraying, and the valves removed to deflate them, but since then they have been languishing against the cover that has been keeping the weather off the vulnerable skid unit.
