PLANS ARE UNDERWAY for the return of the Vale vintage machinery show on 2-3 July, after a two-year gap due to the Covid-19 pandemic. As the world returns back to normality and restrictions are lifted, it was decided by a small committee of volunteers that the Vale vintage machinery show would return even bigger and better in 2022. The event will return to Ty Uchaf Farm Caerwys, by kind permission of the Thomas family. The show is promised to be a traditional, fun-_lled family event hosting a vast array of vintage vehicles from the early days of steam to the internal combustion engine-powered cars, motorcycles, tractors and commercial vehicles. IRELAND WILL HAVE the honour of holding this year’s World Ploughing Contest in Ratheniska, Co. Laois, on 21-22 September. World Ploughing Organisation General Secretary Anna Marie McHugh said: “I am delighted today to announce that 25 countries from all over the globe, from Africa to Australia, will be participating in this year’s World Ploughing Contest in Ireland.” The call came from the World Ploughing Board following the unprecedented cancellation of the event, which had been due to take place this year in Russia. DIFFICULTY RATING Regular readers of T&M may recall the fitting of a brandnew, cutter bar-style hedge trimmer to my neighbour’s MF 35X in the December ’21 issue, and also work carried out on a leaking crankshaft front oil seal at the same time. After setting up the hedge cutter, which has its own hydraulic oil supply driven from a PTO pump, the tractor returned to work to deal with some hedges that were normally cut using a handheld hedge trimmer. The effort of cutting was reduced drastically and many of the hedges could be cut at a height that couldn’t be reached before! Amongst the hedges there is a lot of Blackthorn, which is extremely punishing to tractor tyres, and despite constant clearing of the trimmings the tractor ended up with…

H J Pugh & Co.’s superb Hazle Meadows site, at Ledbury, has been the place to go when buying a stationary engine or cast iron seat in recent years, and a sale on 26 February continued the trend, setting a record in the process. An astonishing £3,350 was paid for a very unglamorous, original seat made by Sellar & Son, of Huntly, Scotland. AEA President The Agricultural Engineers Association has announced the appointment of David Withers, Managing Director of ISEKI UK & Ireland, to serve as President of the AEA. David has been an active member of the AEA for many years, serving on the Outdoor Power Equipment Council since 2000 and this is his second term as a Board member. David entered this industry as a demonstrator at Charterhouse Turf Machinery before moving to a 25-year career at Textron. Starting as a Regional Manager, David had various roles and responsibilities with increasing seniority, culminating in eight years as Managing Director of Ransomes Jacobsen, followed by six years as USA-based President of Jacobsen. Pentland Livestock Ltd.’s Graham Burke has put together a major tractor/implement sale of various collections that is nothing short of spectacular. The sale will take place from 16-23 May. There are more than 100 machines from the collections of: Long, Adam, Black, McLeod and others and included in the sale is a rare, restored Cuthbertson Water Buffalo crawler, based on a WW2 tank design. There are also various Marshalls: a 1944 Marshall M, 1946 Series_1, 1947 Series II, 1949 Series III, 1949 Fowler VF and 1951 Fowler VFA. Cheffins hosted an on-site sale of more than 80 vintage and classic tractors on Saturday 2 April near Newry, Northern Ireland. The tractors were sold on behalf of well-known collector Aidan Strain. It was originally set to happen in 2020 but, owing to Covid-19, took place in 2022. The collection of restored tractors was started by Aidan in the 1990s, with a focus on Massey Fergusons, David Browns, Fords and Internationals, and encompassed 81 tractors, as well as various vehicles, implements and spares, when the sale took place. Mr Strain took the decision to sell the collection to allow for growth of his business, Aidan Strain Electrical Engineering Ltd. The David Brown Tractor Club (DBTC) is going home: After several years of searching for a more suitable building to house its museum collection, the club has announced that it is moving to Meltham Mills – the spiritual home of David Brown tractor production from 1939 to 1988. The previous premises, at nearby Spinksmire Mill, had become in need of some refurbishment and the landlords could offer no guarantee as to the future of the site. A decision had to be made, and the opportunity arose to lease an industrial unit at Meltham Mills. Fittingly, the unit is the last remaining part of H Block, the former assembly building where production of David Brown tractors began in the latter part of 1939. “The move will enable us to host more…

A rare Sharp tractor, dating back to 1904, will make its first public appearance in 70 years at this year’s Tractor Fest to mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. Held at Newby Hall, Ripon, Tractor Fest is the UK’s largest tractor festival showcasing more than 1,500 vintage tractors, machines and vehicles. It has been extended this year to three days over the Bank Holiday Jubilee weekend (3-5 June) in celebration of the Queen’s 70th anniversary as monarch. The Sharp motor tractor, with power-driven cutter bar, was manufactured in York as a prototype by young Lancashire farmer Wilfred Sharp. He established Sharp’s Auto-Mower and Tractor Company at Coppergate, York, and claimed the £175 tractor would mow 35 acres of hay in 10 hours at a cost of just two pence per acre.…

“Abetter British tractor will soon be here,” heralded the announcement on the front cover of Power Farming in October 1982, expressing the optimism of Charles Nickerson, chairman and proprietor of Marshall Ltd. The rebranded, former Leyland tractor dealerships and the loyal customers of, “the only remaining series of all-British original wheeled tractors,” looked forward to another chapter in the story that began in 1948 with the appearance of the Nuffield Universal from the design offices of the Morris Motors empire. Dressed in its striking Poppy Orange livery, the Nuffield range was expanded over the years to include a 2.55-litre, three-cylinder diesel engine in the Universal Three and a 3.4-litre diesel engine in the Universal Four. In part one of this feature I focussed on developments at David Brown and Leyland during the 1970s, but the 1980s brought a whole new set of challenges for both companies – and it is here that I take up the story. David Brown now had a comprehensive range of 90 Series tractors that had been launched in 1979. Based on the older designs, but with more power, new tinwork and new features, they were fitted with a brand-new quiet cab built for the firm by Sekura – the British arm of which was located in Barnsley, also in Yorkshire. This same cab, with detail differences particularly in internal layout, was also used by British Leyland when it introduced its revamped Golden Harvest range of tractors in 1980. Despite the…

Strawson Ltd. will be debuting two tractors from its heritage fleet that have been restored to a high standard by Errol McGuinness in Co. Dublin, Republic of Ireland, at Tractor World Spring on 21-22 May, says Peter Love. These tractors worked extremely hard during their lives, but are still one-owner machines and have completed, on average, 18,000 hours each. For the vintage tractor enthusiast, all roads led to Driffield Showground for a collective machinery sale on Saturday 19 March. The sale was conducted by East Yorkshire auctioneers Dee Atkinson & Harrison and Frank Hill & Son. There was a two per cent buyer’s premium in place on all lots, but bidding was certainly brisk throughout the auction, coming in person and via the Internet. It is worth noting that the proceeds for a number of these items were being donated to the Ukrainian Appeal Fund – a generous gesture indeed. The most expensive plough in the sale though turned out to be a Ransomes TS59 two-furrow match plough, which sold for £500, although a Motrac No.3 two-furrow match plough would have beaten that price if it had met its…

Like so many this Spring, the Ben Blandford Massey Ferguson sale took place in excellent weather, on Saturday 26 March at his Herefordshire farm. There was huge crowd at this event, which went on to set the tone for most of the Spring sales – with record prices for the stock offered. There were plenty of highlights along the way, starting with a Ferguson winch (grade ⅔), at £3,200, while other record prices included a 1965 Massey Ferguson 130, CBX 460C, at £5,000 and £11,000 for an original MF 550. The Massey Ferguson 188 went on to change hands at £16,000 (grade ⅔), while the MF 1250 sold for £26,000.
