BUMPER CROWDS OF visitors and enthusiasts helped make this year’s Tractor Fest at Newby Hall, Ripon, the ‘best ever’ says organiser the Yorkshire Vintage Association. The UK’s largest tractor festival took place over the Bank Holiday Jubilee weekend in celebration of the Queen’s 70th anniversary as monarch. Held over Friday to Sunday, Tractor Fest attracted thousands of visitors who were treated to an extravaganza of vintage tractors displayed across the grounds of Newby Hall. The festival also showcased vintage cars, lorries, stationary engines, commercial vehicles and motorcycles from across the United Kingdom and abroad. Yorkshire Vintage Association chairman Kevin Watson said: “We are delighted with the turnout and support for this year’s Tractor Fest which was all the more special for being held over three days of the Jubilee weekend.…

It was a pleasure to receive a call from Chris Wells of Rushlake Green, East Sussex, and to hear that his 1973 Ford 4000 was finished and ready for the road! This is the latest of several restorations that he has undertaken and I was keen to see the results of his efforts. Chris’ father was the publican at the White Horse Inn, Bodle Street Green, but he purchased Durrants Farm, Cowbeech, and was due to take up residence early in 1963 but because of the horrendous snow and freezing conditions the move was delayed by some weeks. The farm would eventually become Chris’ concern after his father suffered a heart attack when Chris was just 14 years old. He took control, under the guidance of his parents, and would…

Congratulations to the model exhibitors at Tractor World Spring, held at the Three Counties Showground on 21-22 May, where visitors were treated to what must surely be the largest ever display of agricultural dioramas in the UK, says Peter Love. The modern and spacious Severn Hall played host to the scale model element of the show, with so many dioramas that they filled the perimeter of the building. People were so pleased to get out and show their displays that they had been working on during the various lockdowns and this was the ideal place to do it. With Spring well and truly in the air, Saturday 5 March saw a dry, sunny day with a cool, keen wind for the running of the reorganised, renamed Coombes’ Spring Charity Tractor Road Run, writes Anne Bates. Starting from Chadwell Grange, Newport, by kind permission of Mr & Mrs Richard Maddocks, 81 tractors and six four-wheel drive vehicles descended on the potato farm for the run, which had been delayed from its usual Christmas week date due to the Covid-19 restrictions. It was, once again, supporting the fundraising efforts of the Gnosall & Newport Lions Club – which was raising funds for Prostate Cancer testing and awareness. DIFFICULTY RATING When the tractor first arrived, back in 2019, the controls were either seized or very rusty, due to it having languished in brambles for around 20 years. As part of the original equipment, the tractor features a Rest ‘O’ Ride seat, which has two bonded rubber adjustable springs to enable the seat to be adjusted according to the weight of the tractor driver. The condition of the seat was no exception to the rest of the tractor, as the seat pan was rusty, and the whole mechanism beneath was seized up. I could, perhaps, have taken the easy route and replaced the seat assembly as a complete unit, but in the interests of originality I chose to retain the original seat and strip and completely renovate it. DIFFICULTY RATING At last, after nearly seven years of working on my Fordson E27N, I have made some progress! After rebuilding the gearbox and fitting new bearings, and replacing the rear axle oil seals, further work was carried out on the brakes, which were relined and treated to some new operating cables. New retaining springs were also fitted to the clutch thrust bearing carrier, and the two halves of the tractor were then mated together! WATER PUMP REBUILD Turning my attention to the front end of the tractor, I stripped and rebuilt the engine water pump using a new seal gland. The engine itself wasn’t in need of any serious attention, as it is a reconditioned unit, which I had fitted a few years ago from an old Lincoln welder.…

This includes yet another stunning, well-restored County 1474, in grade 5 condition. Others to excite include a David Brown 996 with loader in clean, original condition. We knew it was going to be big and it certainly lived up to its expectations! The second of Alan Bancroft’s dispersal saw original and clean MF tractors go under the hammer, with record prices along the way. Held near Skipton, North Yorkshire, on 7 May, a large crowd was present as well as numerous online bidders. Everything sold, and although all but two tractors were subject to VAT, bidders were not put off – with impressive prices achieved throughout the sale. The traditional auction bell rang at 10am, with Bill King and Oliver Godfrey of Cheffins taking it in turns to sell the various items. STAR LETTER Hedge-cutting shenanigans Dear T&M, Sadly, it takes a while for your magazine to reach newsagents in Melbourne, Australia! I have just found the November 2021 issue of T&M and, on page 77, found the enquiry about the possibility of fitting a hedge cutter to a Ferguson TE-F 20 tractor. The answer to the question is, basically – yes. The letter brought back memories of my apprenticeship days at College Motors, Ashton Gate, Bristol. In about early 1957 we had part-exchanged a TE-F 20 on a new FE 35, and the TE-F 20 came to us with a Bomford & Evershed hedge cutter that was mounted just forward of the steering wheel. DIFFICULTY RATING Back in 2020 I benefitted by the return of my Massey Ferguson 51 disc mower, which I’d swapped for a disastrous SIP 185 drum mower, which had lasted only two seasons before breaking up terminally. The MF 51 completed the 2020 season with no hitches, but halfway through the 2021 haymaking I caught the concrete surround of a drain, which caused some damage to the outer rotor. A strip down of the mower brought the bad news that the bearing housing of the rotor was worn badly and beyond easy repair, as the bearings were running loose in the housing, allowing the rotor to rock dangerously! With no parts to hand to repair it, I’ve had no option but to revert to using the FE-79 mid-mounted mower this…

He has decided to have a clear-out of various things and this well-respected engineer has decided to sell his Field-Marshall Series I and Fowler VF crawler. This tractor came in a very sorry state but, amazingly, the rotten radiator still held water! This was just one item on a long list of parts that had to be replaced to make this fine Massey Ferguson 135 a machine to be proud of once again. Having now been completely restored to a very high standard, both mechanically and cosmetically, it is available to purchase by anyone that cherishes this highly sought-after model. With such good weather I am sure you have been attending various events, with or without your tractor. I was pleased to attend a number events over the Platinum Jubilee long weekend, which must have seen more than 1,500 veteran, vintage and classic tractors out and about somewhere in the country – at rallies and at the many village and town parties. Tractors were also out in force at the Innishannon Rally, Co. Cork, Republic of Ireland, that weekend too. I normally attend this event, but with travelling problems as they are I didn’t take up the organisers’ kind offer this year, but look forward to attending next year. Farmers unite to showcase British farming. LEAF Open Farm Sunday was back on 12 June, making memories and changing perceptions. More than 250 farms across Britain opened their gates to tens of thousands of visitors, showcasing British farming and all it delivers on farming’s annual open day. Every event was unique, showcasing their own farming story from arable, horticulture and livestock to agroforestry and fisheries, but all united with the same aim – to demonstrate the industry’s commitment to sustainability, biodiversity, climate mitigation, delivering nutritious food and a well-managed countryside. This year the overarching theme of ‘health’ allowed scope for farmers to play to their strengths and create innovative activities and displays. THE INAUGURAL FIVE Churches Vintage Tractor Run will take place on Saturday 17 September 2022 starting from Croydon, Cambridgeshire SG8 0DX. The event will be raising funds for Arrington, Barrington, Croydon, Orwell and Wimpole churches and will offer participants the opportunity to enjoy an interesting drive between five villages, including the Wimpole Estate, as well as demonstrate their individual tractors to the public at stop-off points en route. The role of these tractors in the history of farming will be covered, together with their importance to UK food production. In a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, Kelsey Media staged the rescheduled Tractor World Spring show at the Three Counties Showground, Malvern, Worcestershire, on 21-22 May, writes Peter Love. As perhaps expected, the crowd was not quite as big as when the show is normally held in late February or early March, but it was still nice to see plenty of people coming through the gates. There was an excellent display of tractors, trade stands, horticultural, stationary engines, commercial vehicles, steam miniatures, models and, on the Sunday, a plethora of classic cars – so there was plenty for everyone to enjoy over the two days of the event. At least 1,300 lots made up the Tractor World Spring sale on Saturday 21 May, held in warm weather at the Three Counties Showground. This auction usually takes place in the depths of winter, with numerous layers of clothing, but it was certainly not necessary in late May. There were some good lots entered in this sale, particularly in the first half when an original, locally-supplied and used 1966 Ford 3000 went on to sell for £7,600. A new record was set for a well-restored Ford-Ferguson 9N, when some £7,000 was paid for it, but the Ford-Sherman plough behind it did not sell. A restored, 1966 Ford Force 4000 Select-O-Speed, in grade 4 condition, changed hands at £5,000, but the big one was a Massey Ferguson 135 with Sekura cab…
