Portofino Is True Aristocrat By "Cardigan" Yesterday afternoon, in company with Messrs E. A. and H. A. Underwood, I went to R. Sinclair’s stables at Williamstown to inspect Portofino, who was recently imported from England, and who will commence stud duty at "Warlaby" Stud this coming season. PORTOFINO is a particularly nice dark chestnut horse, and it is easy to understand Mr Underwood’s enthusiasm concerning him. Since being in Australia, Portofino has done well, and to keep him fit he has been allowed to do steady work at Williamstown. He is a very evenly made horse, standing, I should say, about 16.1 hands high, and shows a lot of quality. Griff, despite shying badly near the finish, won the time-honoured Caulfield Guineas in something of a shock result. The Caulfield Guineas, for better or worse, has become known as a sire making race so the rather unheralded colt has assured himself of a future in the breeding barn no matter what he does in the rest of his career. He was an $80,000 yearling at the Inglis Premier Sale when knocked down to Kavanagh Racing. The colt had his first start as Gosford on 23 March this year. He finished fifth of the nine runners in the 2yo Maiden over 1200m, in a race quinellaed by the James Cumming trained pair of Zardozi and Restonica. The family in Australia traces back to a mare called St Cecilia by St Amant, a son of St Frusquin. She was to have only one named foal recorded by the Stud Book in Celia who was a daughter of Spearhead by Spearmint. Celia though was to produce the good galloper Spearmain by Manitoba who was to go to stud where he had little success, producing only one stakes winner in Gaymain who won the 1956 Lord Mayor’s Mile in Adelaide. Celia’s other produce was Coveshaw by Stalden, an Australian bred son of Valais. Coveshaw was to be mated with the imported stallion Portofino in 1941 to produce a colt that was to change the fortunes of the family. The colt was sent to the 1944 Melbourne Yearling Sales. In…

A famous writer on the thoroughbred, Bruce Lowe, put forward the theory that the second and subsequent foals from the same parents were not so vigorous as the first one. He called this theory 'saturation.' There has always existed among greyhound breeders a prejudice against the second litter from the same parents, and like many other widely-held fallacies there is no foundation for it.
