HARDLY ART

AWAY from the identikit suburbs, California can be a wild place. Where Shana Cleveland lives for instance, out near Grass Valley and the Sierra Nevada mountains, there are coyotes, foxes, mountain lions and rattlesnakes. It’s the kind of place, she explains, where you watch life and death up close, where the whole kaleidoscope of nature, both beautiful and horrible, can be seen. “Every year a mother fox has babies right behind our house,” she tells Uncut. “But that seems to also happen with rattlesnakes, so we see a lot of rattlesnake babies, which are terrifying and not cute…”
Combine that with pregnancy, another episode the Michigan-raised Cleveland found “equally psychedelic”, and you get Manzanita, her second proper solo album following 2019’s excellent Night Of The Worm…
