A genuine road warrior, Pamela Williams hits the highway on any given day to scour the country’s best antiques shows and flea markets for her North Carolina boutique, Branching Out. Around the bend and down the hill into Wiscasset, “Maine’s prettiest village,” there’s a charming sea captain’s home. The Marston House, which is what proprietors Paul and Sharon Mrozinski have called it since they opened it a little more than two decades ago, is one of nearly two dozen antiques shops that have made this tiny town a precious find for collectors. On any visit to the white-clapboard, Federal-style structure built in 1785, you’ll find an array of eighteenthand nineteenth-century collectibles, including handmade French garden smocks, striped harvest sacks, Parisian dressmaker mannequins, handblown glass cloches, and delicately painted milliners’ heads. Long before writing the acclaimed novels for which she is best known, Edith Wharton penned a design manual called The Decoration of Houses. In it she stated, “The desire for symmetry, for balance, for rhythm is one of the most inveterate of human instincts.” At a time when flowery Victorian décor was ubiquitous, The Decoration of Houses, co-authored by architect Ogden Codman Jr., introduced a radical way of looking at interiors—one that included proportion and relatively minimal details. Wharton believed in straightforward design, and the book advocated a return to simple and unfussy decorating. Five years after the work was published, she hired Codman and a second architect, Francis L.V. Hoppin, to bring these principles to life. Lemon Butter Cookies Makes about 3 dozen cookies 1 1/4 sticks unsalted butter, softened 1/2 cup sugar 1 large egg at room temperature 1 1/2 teaspoons lemon zest 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract 2 cups sifted all-purpose flour 2 tablespoons toasted almond flour 1 cup confectioners’ sugar 3 tablespoons ground freeze-dried raspberries (optional) 1. In a large bowl, and using an electric mixer at mediumhigh speed, beat butter and sugar together until light and fluffy, about 5 minutes. Beat in egg, lemon zest, and vanilla extract; scrape down sides of bowl. In a small bowl, combine all-purpose flour and almond flour. Italian Pistachio-Cherry Biscotti Makes 24 biscotti 2 cups all-purpose flour 1 cup sugar 1/2 teaspoon baking powder 1/4 teaspoon salt 3 eggs, divided 1 1/2 teaspoons water 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract 1/2 teaspoon almond extract 3/4 cup shelled pistachios, coarsely chopped 1/2 cup dried cherries 1. Preheat oven to 350?. Lightly spray a baking sheet with nonstick cooking spray with flour*; set aside. 2. In a medium bowl, combine flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. In a small bowl, whisk together 2 eggs and 1 egg yolk. Reserve remaining egg white. 3. Whisk in water, vanilla extract, and almond extract.
