It was September when my husband and I stepped foot on Scottish soil for the first time. The autumn air was delightfully crisp, and we were immediately captivated by this majestic land of rich heritage and breathtaking vistas. During our visit, we surveyed rolling pastoral fields and explored a range of storied destinations, from magnificent estates to quaint villages. Ducking into Main Street shops revealed cozy alcoves piled high with troves of freshly milled tartans, handspun yarn, and other locally made treasures. Most of the stately manors found in Jan and Stan Cash’s historic neighborhood date to the early 1920s, when this eminent mountaintop enclave was founded. Such was the case with their previous residence, which came with the option to buy the wooded lot next door. On Sundays after church when I was growing up, my father drove our family to his mother’s house for lunch. Grandmother lived in a 1914 Craftsman-style home that featured wide eaves above a deep front porch. Its distinctive square pillars were flanked by wooden rails and balustrades. The ease and convenience with which we can take photographs with a cell phone today makes it difficult to imagine what an incredible novelty taking someone’s picture was during the Victorian era. The earliest practical photographs were called daguerreotypes, named after inventor Louis Daguerre and introduced commercially around 1839. The exposures took a long time, and they were typically rather formal and unsmiling portraits taken by a photographer in a studio. Daguerreotypes tended to be small in size, and because they were also fragile, they would be placed in leather cases lined with soft velvet or silk fabric for protection. Victorian photography evolved with the innovations of Henry Fox Talbot, including paper-based photographs and faster exposures times, but the development procedure was still expensive and involved dangerous chemicals. When Gael and Francesco Boglione bought the old plant nursery abutting their seventeenth-century home, Petersham House in suburban Richmond, they pondered the myriad possibilities for the place. After an extensive renovation, the totally transformed venue reopened in 2004 as Petersham Nurseries, with a shop, café, and teahouse added to the horticultural offerings. Last year, Petersham opened its much-anticipated second location on King Street in the fashionable Covent Garden area. Reminiscent of antique tracery, old-fashioned motifs rendered on faux linen allow modern hobbyists to pursue a pastime tied to genteel female instruction, creativity, and edification.
