While Jackie Marro was growing up in Vermont, she often stitched clothes for her three younger sisters’ dolls, an activity that inspired a lifelong love of sewing, which in turn led her to a career in the fashion industry. In her position as a designer for a junior-clothing manufacturer, she particularly enjoyed the aspect of choosing fabrics, trims, and buttons and turning them into stylish apparel. She later taught design, pattern making, and merchandising at a university before owning a retail shop. Roseberry Scones p.78 Makes 8 3 cups all-purpose flour3 teaspoons baking powder1 teaspoon packed lemon zest½ teaspoon kosher salt½ teaspoon ground ginger8 tablespoons cold unsalted butter, cubed¼ cup finely chopped toasted pecans½ cup cold heavy whipping cream, plusmore for brushing scones2 tablespoons Rose Honey (recipe follows)½ cup fresh raspberries1 large egg, lightly beaten 1. Preheat oven to 375°. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. 2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, lemon zest, salt, and ginger. Bethany Berk makes her way to the greenhouse in her garden, threading a path through raised beds brimming with aromatic herbs. The crystal chandelier hanging from the ceiling of the eye-catching iron-and-glass structure is the first hint that besides a green thumb, this accomplished gardener also has impeccable taste. When Linda Vater and her husband, Jamie, moved into their home three decades ago, the only thing growing in the front yard was an old oak tree. The backyard was no better; a tangle of blackberry brambles and bare clay presented quite a daunting picture. Fortunately, the house itself was in much better shape. Original mahogany woodwork and shutters framed the spaces, and the oak floors required nothing more than waxing and buffing. A carefully researched paint treatment bestowed the walls with a mellow patina normally acquired over centuries, while the exterior was sandblasted back to its authentic finish.
