These talented women will contribute to each issue of this periodical, and their works will enrich us all. I am so pleased to welcome back noted author and essayist Phyllis Theroux, who was our writer in 2015 and has been a frequent contributor to Victoria in years past. Just a few kilometers from the Sorgue river’s source in Fontaine-de-Vaucluse, the translucent waters branch into two equally crystalline streams at the Provençal town of L’Isle-surla-Sorgue. From its origins in early nineteenth-century Germany, mercury glass, also known as silvered glass, has enjoyed a loyal following—first among those for whom sterling was too dear for the budget and later with collectors who loved its antique look. From a distance, it might be hard to tell the difference between the two, but closer inspection will reveal the true nature and nuances of this tarnish-free counterpart. The name itself is a misnomer, for it contains no mercury. In truth, it is composed of double-walled clear glass with a silver-nitrate solution poured between the layers through a tiny hole, which is then plugged. I have a treasured memory of traveling to San Francisco once a year with my precious grandmother to enjoy the Ice Follies at Winterland. What a glorious time I had as I dressed for the city in my fancy dress that tied with a big bow, my Mary Jane shoes, lace socks, hat, purse, and gloves! My grandmother always dressed in the fashion of the year and wore her lovely hats, jewels, purse, and, of course, her gloves. What a fashion statement we made! Located in Warwickshire, the 4 acres include a charming abode owned and lovingly tended by Clive and Anne Musgrave. The Musgraves have long enjoyed traveling to antiques fairs, flea markets, and brocantes, searching diligently to find items with a story to tell. Over the years, they have amassed quite an assortment of treasures, aided by Anne’s gift for seeing beauty beneath the surface. It is with this same perspective that they approached Dairy House Farm, once a working dairy farm with a combination of land and structures—some dating back to the 1600s.
