If ever a firm deserved a strident, brass-driven theme tune by Shirley Bassey, then it’s Devon. It was, alongside Westfalia, one of the most significant Volkswagen Camper converters of all time. Unlike the German Westfalia company though, Devon was very British, based in the county it borrowed its name from.
Devon owes its existence to Jack White – no, not that one, but a Sidmouth-based builder and carpenter. The family of his wife, Annelie, lived in Germany and thus, every so often, they’d travel to visit in Jack’s Beetle. However, an expanding family forced Jack to upgrade to a Split Screen Transporter in 1955.
