Forty-nine year old Andreas Berger hails from Wuerselen in Germany and is what you might call a prolific collector of old VWs. He’s owned some pretty rad rides over the years and he has a penchant for utility vehicles such as this fabulous, unrestored fire engine. “tracking down the bits and bobs was as enticing as the initial purchase” His passion for VWs started pretty much as soon as he got his driver’s licence. When released in 1955, you might say the Type 14 Karmann Ghia was very much the product of its time, courtesy of its curvy – some would say sexy – design. The car enjoyed great commercial success with 440,000 manufactured until ’74. But, as we all know, that wasn’t the only sporty VW that came out of the Osnabrück factory… Karmann also produced a very different coupe, unveiled during Frankfurt’s International Motor Show in September 1961: the Type 34. Penned by Sergio Sartorelli and made up until ’69, it stands out thanks to its scalpel sharp lines which make it look quite different from the Type 14’s luscious silhouette. I thought I’d seen just about everything in the VW conversion world – the good, the bad and the downright ugly. Until, that is, some pics arrived on my desk from our regular snapper Ron McFarlane of a smart red Beetle, that grew more interesting the longer you looked at it. While apparently only subtly altered at first, it soon became evident that it was a split-screen car at both ends, which in turn had altered the rake of the A-pillars. The biggest shock, however, came when I saw the shot of the engine compartment, where things looked very different indeed. It’s perhaps fitting that in the same month Volkswagen announced it was finally axing the Beetle from its current range, the Mexican & Brazilian Beetle Register here in the UK celebrated 35 years since its first meeting. Back in October 1983 when a small group owning Mexican and Brazilian-built Beetles first established the club, it was still possible to buy a new Beetle through the German Volkswagen network, since although German production had ended in 1978, the cars continued to be produced in VW’s Puebla plant. It’s been a few months since my last confession, sorry, update. I last left the saga of my ’67 Beetle with news that it was going in to have some old body issues sorted out on the front quarter panel. I complicated matters somewhat, as I needed the car back in one piece to drive to Suffolk and Norfolk for a week so, to save time, I removed the wings and other parts myself. As the passenger side of the car had been painted a few years ago, the driver’s side looked really scruffy and had some surface rust, so I decided to get this addressed at the same time.
