Who amongst us doesn’t love a car show? Silly question really, because I know the answer is we all do. However, there’s no getting away from the fact that going to the same shows, year in year out can get a bit tedious. So, what’s a motorhead to do? Try some different ones, of course. Even the most hardcore VW enthusiast has to admit that Split Screen Buses aren’t renowned for their handling. If only there was a way of making them go around corners as if they were on rails? Well, in the 1950s, a few companies made them do just that. The Volkswagen Draisines were early Type 2s converted for use on railway lines. But there was a lot more to it than just whipping the tyres off and plonking them on tracks, especially the ingenious, if flawed, way to turn them around. It all started with a batch of motorised trolleys constructed for Deutsche Bundesbahn (West German state railways) at the start of the 1950s. They used industrial versions of VW’s air-cooled engine and were snappily titled Kleinwagon mit Vebrennungsmotor, which translates…

There she blows! Spotted recently down at VW Heritage HQ in Shoreham-by-Sea, the ex-VolksWorld race car being loaded onto a trailer in readiness for a trip to the North Hertfordshire College in Stevenage. The car will spend a number of months at the college where students on its Motor Vehicle programme will have the opportunity to learn the fine art of vehicle body repair. The car’s owner, VW Heritage MD, Barney Dines, told us he has big plans for the car and is hoping to have it back out on track later this year. We look forward to seeing it.…

Now in its second year under new ownership, Slough Swapmeet continues to thrive. Despite the moody November fog, it was with an air of excitement we set off round the M25 loaded to the gunwhales with lovely VW artefacts and some of editor James’ old tat. Once again, we were greeted by cheery faces, good organisation and a surprising number of air-cooled VWs in the car park. After a frantic hour unloading our booty, we looked around to take stock. “After only 400 or 500 miles the engine went pop” James Barron-Clark, 1968 Squareback James Barron-Clark spotted his 1968 Type 3 Squareback for sale on thesamba.com, at the time located in Los Angeles, USA. He emailed the vendor, obtained plenty of photographs and decided to take a chance and purchase the car, hoping for the best and that he wasn’t buying a dud. That was six years ago and, when the car arrived in the UK, James was pleased with his purchase. Back then the Squareback was painted bright blue and was fitted with polished 2.0-litre Porsche alloys.
