The addiction all started a few years ago now, when my fiancée decided to take me to a VW show one sunny Sunday for a day out. The T6 Caravelle we borrowed was a 2019 Executive model fitted with the 2.0-litre, 150bhp TDi motor and seven-speed DSG transmission, a combination which returned an average 42mpg over our five-day, 1,000-mile test. VW Action is the UK’s longest running VW Festival, and 2019 marked the 43rd anniversary of this much-loved Volkswagen fun fest. Inspiration can sometimes come from the weirdest places. In the years I’ve been writing for VW magazines, I’ve heard it all. For many, it comes from vehicles seen at shows, or in magazines. Very few ideas are truly original any more, but are usually borrowed, copied or an adaptation of ideas seen on other builds – and not necessarily Transporters. Then there are the randoms. People who paint a car to match the colour of a favourite lipstick, or plagiarise the colour scheme of a surfboard, or motor racing team, or any other brand you care to mention. Mark Ainsley qualifies as one of those randoms, as the T4 you see here was inspired by a Honda Del Sol. You know, one of those Honda Del Sols? No, me neither……

The Great British Campout is the brainchild of VW enthusiast, Ian Alcorn, from Nottingham. Ian initially came up with the idea so his children would have something exciting to do at the weekend. The plan was simple: invite fellow VW and camping friends to spend a night in their Vans whilst parked on the drive, or in a tent pitched in the garden, with a suggested £2 ‘Just Giving’ donation in support of NHS staff and volunteers caring for Covid-19 patients (run by NHS Charities Together). A Facebook group was created on March 30 and, with the event due to take place on Saturday, April 4, the fundraising target was set at £100. It is a nine-seater T5.1 Caravelle – four-wheel drive – with a Seikel lift kit and bigger tyres. I’ve fitted a rear-elevating roof and a few plug ’n’ play homemade parts to convert it in a Camper. When it is in Camper mode, it is possible to add more seats so up to seven people can travel in comfort. I think it’s a very versatile Van. It has a 30-litre fresh water tank, 20-litre waste water tank, LPG for the kitchen, three-litre electric boiler, compressor refrigerator, working table, plus external plugs for the shower and LPG BBQ.
