Having been into VWs for over 30 years, I’m often a bit shocked when someone sells a VW and moves over to something like a Transit. I guess, back in the day (we’re talking the ‘80s and ‘90s here) owning a Volkswagen was a bit of a niche pastime; they were rarer than many other brands due to their higher cost and higher resale value, so it took quite a lot to be a VW owner. Cars like the Mk4 Golf and of course the T4 and T5 changed all of this and brought the Volkswagen name into a much more mainstream category, so it’s no wonder that the scene attracts so many people these days who aren’t exclusive to the VW marque. The van isn’t the only thing Paul has kept hold of for many years. The 1983/84 PK Ripper hanging off the back in the photos is his own bike from childhood. The Perry Kramer Ripper is a legendary bike in the BMX world. Painting the grey interior plastic in a Transporter is a great way of making it look like less of a tired work van, especially if you’re going full-custom on every other part of the build. Tom also incorporated wood into his dash, as well as different paint effects on the dash, door cards and headliner. It’s basically a hodgepodge of different shades and as eclectic and bat shit as an antiques emporium. Earlier in the year we covered the first ever monthly C&C meet, and it’s fair to say the guys have created a bit of a monster that just seems gets better with every meet. So, we thought we’d check out the fourth and final event of 2021, and damn are we glad we did, as not only was it another stonker of a meet, the weather gods were also on side and it was shorts, tees and sunnies all the way (this was a few months ago by the way!). The first major stage of work on the T5 interior has started this month. With a few days off between Christmas and New Year it was time to rip everything out the van and do what I should have done when I first got it… The problem we all have with daily drivers and on-going projects is the fact that they are just that, daily drivers. They can come apart Friday evening but need to be back on the road Sunday ready for a week’s work come Monday morning. The only issue I have is I also work a lot of weekends at events or photographing feature vehicles. So, the Christmas break was the perfect time to work on the van.
