There’s nothing quite like the quiet of being underwater. The hubbub of the world becomes a pulsating hush, something in between silence and sound—almost like hearing the rhythms of our own bodies amplified. The artist Calida Rawles, 43, discovered this sensation and the sense of peace that comes with it when she started swimming laps for exercise seven years ago. She also discovered something else: an important subject for her work. A graduate of Spelman College who got her M.A. in painting at New York University, Rawles kept up her artmaking in her 30s in Los Angeles—while working mainly as a graphic designer—by doing hyperrealistic portraits. Long before awards season begins, I try to see as many movies as possible in preparation for our annual Directors Issue, which is now in its third iteration. It was a great year in cinema, and choosing the directors to feature was not easy, but in the end we invited Quentin Tarantino (Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood), Bong Joon Ho (Parasite), and Noah Baumbach (Marriage Story) to direct three remarkable photo shoots for W. When it came to finding a Paris apartment for himself, the young interior designer Fabrizio Casiraghi was willing to settle for a lot less than most of his clients. But if Casiraghi’s needs were modest, they were also nonnegotiable. Five years ago, the revolution at Gucci, which jump-started a revolution in fashion, began with what appeared to be a classic loafer. Its front was made of soft black leather, decorated with the traditional Gucci gold horse-bit ornament; the back half, however, told another, more surprising story. It was completely open, like a slipper, and the footbed was lined in long kangaroo fur that spilled out in all directions. In his film Parasite, the director Bong Joon Ho depicts the parallel universes of two families of four—one rich, one poor—who infiltrate each other’s lives. When the son of the impoverished family is employed to tutor the young daughter of the affluent one, he senses an opportunity, and in short order his sister masquerades as an art therapist for the well-off family’s withdrawn son; his father becomes the family’s chauffeur; and his mother displaces a beloved housekeeper. From their flood-prone semibasement apartment in a slum, the Kims ascend to the Parks’ sleek mansion on a hill. The movie deftly seesaws between empathy for one side and the other: The tonal shifts in Parasite happen so subtly that victims become aggressors—and vice versa—with fascinating speed. College reunions don’t usually involve a cast of glamorous models and a slickly produced magazine shoot in a hangar-size photo studio in Paris. Unless, of course, your alma mater happens to be the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, in Antwerp, where the dream team behind this story—the photographer Willy Vanderperre, the stylist Olivier Rizzo, and the makeup artist Peter Philips—met and first collaborated in the early 1990s. “I remember when we started shooting together, it was just daylight and a reflector, and slowly the spotlight came in, and then studio lights,” says Philips, who is the creative and image director for Christian Dior Makeup. “Now Willy is a lighting virtuoso. What’s the most prized possession in your closet? In New York, it’s all the floor art that I put away so people don’t step on it, and so the cleaning people don’t throw it out: Fischli and Weiss rubble, Carl Andre tiles. The rubble is all hand-carved but it looks like construction rubble, so it would be normal to throw it away. It hasn’t happened, but I’ve heard stories. I hang art in my closets too—weird art, like this kind of hideous portrait of Judy Garland that a fan sent me. I put that behind the coats in the front hall, so only I see it.
