1 UP HELLY AA, SHETLAND, UK
It was in 1824 that Shetland locals first held wild parties to mark pagan Yule’s end. Later, flaming tar barrels were added; now Lerwick’s Up Helly Aa is crowned by the burning of a Viking longship (29 Jan 2019). Few, however, realise the fun extends into March as other isles stage their versions.
2 SNOW STAR FESTIVAL, PERU
Every May/June, pilgrims flock to Sinakara Valley for Qoyllur Rit’i, a centuries-old festival mixing Catholic and Incan beliefs. They honour Christ, the stars, harvest and a sacred glacier over three days of drumming, dancing and colour, in between pilgrimages up the glacier.
