Your first negatives date back to 1976, when you were 20 years old. How did you approach photography? In 1974 we were racing motorcycles. A friend of my brother’s was his racing technician. He would tell him: “This bike already has a thousand kilometers on it, we have to change the piston, ” or the chains, or whatever. This guy took pictures and came to the races with a Leica. And he took pictures of my brother and came home on Thursdays with black and white photos, and I asked my parents for a camera as a Christmas present to take pictures of motorcycles. I’m curious as to what the soundtrack of your childhood was, Joep. What records did you listen to at home? Not very many. My parents were very busy, they barely had a couple of records and none of them were very good. Ashley Joseph Martin (1992, Pittsburgh) began working with wood because it was readily accessible to a Boy Scout with a pocket knife and a fallen tree branch in his hands. Lucia Mondadori (Porto Alegre, age 41) had been making pottery for a couple of years when the pandemic forced her to travel from France to southern Brazil. Under lockdown with her family, the designer improvised a pottery studio on her balcony, without a potter’s wheel or glazes. She had only her own hands, so she ventured into making the “little snakes” that are typical of the coiling technique. Your portraits of celebrities such as Bono, Leonardo DiCaprio, and the Dalai Lama are world-renowned. How do you manage to bring something new out of such photographed figures? When I do each portrait I challenge myself to try to get something that lasts, to make something iconic. It’s hard to do that when an individual has been portrayed as often as the ones you mention, but I strive for it. Often it’s a subtle twist, an instant in the middle of a moment. What names or references from the world of photography have interested you? Which ones have you incorporated into your work from other disciplines? There are many disciplines and within them many authors that influence us and make us reflect on what to investigate and in what direction. As we explained before, we need a stage of reasoning and learning before starting to photograph. This stage is not usually visual. What we are interested in understanding is more related to philosophical issues, mainly natural philosophy and philosophy of science and nature. This is the discipline that guides our work.
