Sensitive skin is becoming more and more prevalent and one of the most common skincare complaints. Emma Hobson, education manager for the International Dermal Institute and Dermalogica, shares her insights on why sensitive skin is on the rise and how to combat irritating side effects.
When it comes to irritation, there are various factors, internal and external, that contribute to sensitivity in the skin—the big one being our environment and the rise in pollution, Hobson says. “In addition, lifestyle stressors, hormonal fluctuations and other environmental factors such as weather conditions—extreme cold, dryness, indoor heating or air conditioning,” cause irritation, she notes. “Then there’s smoking, alcohol, poor diet, medical procedures and even over-processed or exfoliated skin,” which, Hobson says, all contribute to sensitisation.
