Now, police have revealed that the Empire star staged the whole ordeal, allegedly paying $5000 for the fake attack. On February 21, Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie T. Johnson criticised Smollett, 36, for “taking advantage of the pain and anger of racism to promote his career.” Johnson called the attack a “publicity stunt” that became “a scar that Chicago didn’t earn and certainly didn’t deserve”.
