Julia Gillard FEMINIST ICON For three years, Julia Gillard held the highest post in the land: Australia’s 27th – and first female – Prime Minister. During that era, 2010 to 2013, she was relentlessly insulted and bullied by rivals. Rather than just attacking her politics, critics mocked her hairstyle, clothing, appearance and character. After countless sexist insults, Gillard finally called out her detractors, most notably the leader of the opposition at the time, Tony Abbott, in what became known as The Misogyny Speech. Their driver, Henri Paul, was found to be under the influence and speeding at nearly twice the posted limit in the Pont de l’Alma tunnel when he lost control of the vehicle, killing himself and the couple in the crash. Crime In a disturbing case, a British nurse has been charged over the “cold-blooded” murders of seven babies in her care. Manchester Crown Court has heard that on the evening of August 3, 2015, an English mother walked into the neonatal ward of a hospital in Chester, northwest England, to find one of her premature twin babies bleeding from the mouth. Allegedly standing over the tiny boy was a nurse who told the mum (who cannot be named for legal reasons) that everything was fine. The bleeding, the neonatal nurse allegedly explained, was caused by a feeding tube that was irritating the baby’s throat. “Trust me,” she reportedly said. “I’m a nurse.” Prosecutors say that nurse was Lucy Letby, and five hours later the baby boy was dead. Thousands of people welcomed tradie runner Nedd Brockmann home to Bondi Beach at 5.30pm on October 17, after the 23-year-old completed his epic 3800km run from Perth. An exhausted Brockmann raised over $1.5 million for homelessness charity, We Are Mobilise. He began his 46-day mission in Cottesloe on September 1, packing in an incredible 10 hours and up to 100km per day on the road. Brockmann celebrated his epic feat from the balcony of the North Bondi Surf Life Saving Club with a champagne shower and a ‘shoey’ to the delight of crowds before reconnecting with family and friends. Fiona McFarlane’s new novel, The Sun Walks Down, follows a town’s desperation to find a 6-year-old boy who goes missing in a dust storm. Set during colonial times in the Flinders Ranges, locals must confront their relationships – both with one another and with the landscape they inhabit. Robbie Coltrane starred in two James Bond films and popular British series, Cracker, but he will be remembered by generations as Rubeus Hagrid in J. K. Rowling’s Harry Potter films. As a small child, Michala Banas either had a bladder or urinary tract infection, or was on antibiotics.
