HEIRLOOM If you found the kitchen table we built a while back a tempting project, but shied away because of the lack of a complementary chair, your wait is over. As you see in the main photo, the chair’s construction and finish echoes the kitchen table that was built in Woodsmith 268. The legs, stretchers, and backrest are made of 6/4 oak that’s ebonized in the same manner as the base of the table. As for the joinery, the canted back legs are joined with dowels to the short sides. In turn the sides are joined to the backrest via splined compound angles. The back rest is a study in angles and flowing surfaces. SHOP Raise your hand if you have a stash of wood that consists of pieces that are, in fact, too small to be of much use. They’re also usually too pretty to go in the burn box. Guilty here, as well. Design Editor Dillon Baker offers you some justification for that collection: make a small torpedo level. In this example, a delightful piece of walnut (along with some walnut burl veneer) takes center stage. His version is modeled after Scottish tools of the 19th century. These were made from rich-colored wood (mahogany, ebony, bubinga, etc.) and adorned with decorative brasswork. That’s no less true at the lathe, which is why I whipped up this auxiliary workstation. The station is made of three plywood parts: a table, a runner, and a pair of turn buttons to lock it in place. There are few joints I use as regularly as grooves and dadoes. They may lack the flair of a dovetail or the outright strength of a mortise and tenon, but, for a functional and efficient joint, it’s hard to ask for more. Grooves and dadoes are an integral part of most case and drawer constructions. They’re easily made with either a router or table saw (or even by hand), and secured by glue or screws. Not only do they provide mechanical strength to a joint, but these joints also make it easy to register all the pieces during assembly. GROOVES VERSUS DADOES. TOY There are two laws of nature when you have children: first, the toys will spread to every corner of the home. Second, you will find the missing Lego brick in the middle of the night — by stepping on it. The midnight discovery I can’t help you with. However, the play station project here can offer some assistance in corraling the chaos. Its designer, John Doyle, created a modular system that combines a double-surface table, a bookcase, and an art center. The art of inlaying decorative wooden details into a piece of furniture has been a hallmark of fine craftsmanship for centuries. Traditionally, those inlays were painstakingly crafted to fit into hand-carved and chiseled recesses. But today you have another option available to you. All you need is a plunge router and a simple inlay kit. THE INLAY KIT. The secret to getting great results lies in the design of the inlay kit, shown in the photo at left. (Refer to page 66 for sources.) It starts with a brass guide bushing that screws into the base of your router (like the ones you’d use with a dovetail jig). Fortunately, there’s never an end to the parade of tools and accessories to make life better in the shop. This time around we’ll take a look at a versatile bench vise and a slick jig for drilling holes in cabinets, along with a couple of well-made saw blades, and, lastly, a handy jig for sharpening chisels and plane blades. Book boxes evoke mystery. The same kind of mystery that lurks in those special bookcases — the ones where you tilt out a certain book and part of the bookcase opens to a hidden passage. As you see in the photos above, the two books bear all the anatomy of a standard book, but they’re structurally different. The front and back boards, combined with the leaves of the pages make up the case. The drawer consists of the spine, which is the drawer front, attached to the drawer box that slides into the case. There are certain woodworking skills that unlock new possibilities once you know about them. It’s like jumping through a pipe and starting a side quest in a video game. Template routing is one of those skills. Template routing comes up in the torpedo level, play station, and kitchen chair — just from this issue. The technique is simple in concept: create a template of the shape you require, then use a router and a special bit to recreate the shape of the template onto a workpiece. Template routing is usually associated with making complex profiles or when you need multiple copies. However, there are good reasons to employ this technique for everyday tasks.
