They may not have won any kind of trophy, but there’s no doubt Lille had a stellar campaign. In the eyes of many, they enjoyed the best of any French team, including Paris Saint-Germain. Under Christophe Galtier, Les Dogues qualified for the Champions League by finishing second in Ligue 1, fully 16 points behind PSG. But if you think that isn’t particularly impressive, think again. Adebate is raging in Russia as to whether jailed Zenit forward Aleksandr Kokorin has a moral right to a league winners’ medal this season. Kokorin, who recently received an 18-month prison sentence for two counts of assault, is technically entitled to the aforementioned prize. I mean the whole idea of this elaborate set-up of additional referees and a bank of monitors that spew out replays at all speeds from all angles. For the second consecutive A-League Grand Final, the post-match headlines were made by VAR, not the players.
