As its name suggests, South Korea’s national stadium was built for the 2002 World Cup. Designed to look like a Korean kite, it played a significant role at the tournament, hosting the opening ceremony, the first match and the semi-finals, yet afterwards became the source of controversy.
With the Korea Football Association keen to make use of the impressive facility post-World Cup, they began searching for new tenants. Anyang Cheetahs, having left the capital in 1996 and changed their name from Lucky-Goldstar Hwangso, returned as Seoul FC, and became one of the country’s most supported clubs – although also heavily disliked by rival fans.
Thanks to their stadium, they’ve had the K-League’s highest average attendance…
