My perception of Duncan Ferguson the footballer was all elbows, headers and hernias–and trouble off the pitch. Reality differs from reputation. Having spent time with Ferguson helping him ghost his life story, I quickly appreciated the humour, humanity and depth of the man. Having also reviewed old Everton matches of his, I was reminded of the deftness as well as power in that left foot. It was a crying shame that Ferguson played only seven times for Scotland because of a much-publicised falling-out with the Scottish FA. Football is not such an easy game as many seem to think. Take a very good team and add a very good player and the result is not necessarily an even better team. The European champions Real Madrid bought Kylian Mbappe and Endrick this summer and yet they went into the September international break four points behind Barcelona. There’s no reason to panic. Madrid are good enough and Barcelona chaotic enough that Real will probably still consider themselves favourites to defend their title. When Larne owner Kenny Bruce took over in 2017, European football was nothing more than a distant dream with the club rooted near the bottom of Northern Ireland’s second tier and equally struggling off the pitch. Now, that dream is a reality after they became the first Northern Irish club to reach the group phase of a European competition. Supporters at Inver Park had never seen their team win the NIFL Premiership before 2022-23, but they have now won it back-to-back. One of the trends of the latest transfer window was that of increased spending by Brazilian clubs–a consequence of greater financial power, in part a result of the new business model that some clubs have adopted in the past three years. The giant clubs have spent the last few years trying to bring back Brazilians from Europe either towards the end of their careers or whose moves across the Atlantic haven’t worked. This extended to other South Americans–Flamengo’s signing of Southampton’s Carlos Alcaraz shows they can compete for younger players–and Europeans, although Corinthians’ signing of Memphis Depay comes across as the desperation of a big club fighting relegation. Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta can only hope that his charges have fully absorbed the lessons from that 3-2 aggregate loss to the Bavarians: the costly moments of defensive inattention and lack of conviction going forward, an altogether rare occurrence for the North Londoners. Either by design or happy coincidence, the nominees for the 2024 Ballon d’Or were announced by UEFA and French publisher Groupe Amaury on the precise 69th anniversary of the first match in what was the European Champions Cup between Sporting and Partizan Belgrade. A golden thread runs all the way from one event to the other. On September 4,1955, the first goal was scored by Sporting’s Joao Baptista Martins in front of a 30,000-strong crowd in the Estadio Nacional during a tempestuous 3-3 draw. LILLE Never say die Les Dogues are a hard team to kill off. In both qualifying ties, against Fenerbahce and Slavia Prague, there were moments when they were hanging on for dear life, only to rally and eventually prevail. Originally known as FC Artsakh–the Armenian word for the former breakaway state of Nagorno-Karabakh, which was invaded by Azerbaijan last year–the club was based out of Armenia’s capital Yerevan.
