This first issue of 2026 is a combination of reflecting and looking ahead. It will not be the first time in recent editions that Morocco are hot favourites for success at the Africa Cup of Nations finals, but the continental championship is a tournament where the form book is often way off the mark. GROUP A COMOROS (0 AFCON wins) The Indian Ocean island nation return for only their second finals appearance after a shock win over Ghana in Cameroon 2021 and an unexpected place in the round of 16 at the first time of asking. They qualified unbeaten at the top of their group, beating Tunisia into second place with a surprise1-0 away triumph and overcoming the disadvantage of not being able to play at home because their stadium was in need of renovating. Their home games were hosted in Ivory Coast and Morocco, but this proved no hindrance. In a sure sign of impressive continuity at the highest level, Europe’s three best performing sides from the last two World Cups were the quickest in the qualification stakes for next summer’s FIFA jamboree. England were so dominant in their group that they had top spot sewn up with two games to spare, while Croatia and France both sealed the deal in the penultimate round of fixtures. There was drama everywhere in November’s qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup but while there was only one head-to-head in Asia, it didn’t disappoint. Iraq and the United Arab Emirates met in the two-legged fifth round and it went right down to the wire – the 17th minute of added time in the return match. He started there back in 2006 and, after five years away, returned in 2013. Forge FC have dominated the Canadian Premier League (CPL) since its launch in 2019, winning the North Star Cup as league champions four times and reaching the play-off final on two other occasions. The 2025 season kicked off in April and when Forge began the campaign with a record 20-match unbeaten run – the first of their two losses came at the end of August – it looked like it would be seven out of seven CPL finals for the club from the steel city of Hamilton, Ontario.
