It might be that too-important discount offer from Amazon Local or a late-day/early-morning work email that must be returned to someone else who will undoubtedly read it during the family dinner or before he gets out of bed. NEWS & NOTES FROM AROUND THE YACHTING WORLD THIS AUGUST, class will quite literally be underway on the North Sea. There, the 210-foot tall ship Sørlandet will begin sailing from Kristiansand, Norway, with 60 live-aboard students and their teachers. They’ll be embarking on an experience that can truly be described as “worldly.” Each student has signed on for at least one year of cruising while completing advanced-placement courses and SAT exams. JUST IN TIME FOR THE summer cruising season, the Sea Tow Foundation is adding 20 life jacket loaner s)tands (and 1,000 life jackets to fill them) to its network of 260 stands across the United States. The life jackets are being purchased with a grant from the Sport Fish Restoration and Boating Trust Fund, which is administered by the U.S. Coast Guard. As with all life jackets on Sea Tow Foundation loaner stands, the new ones will be available to any boaters who need to borrow a jacket for an unexpected guest, a child or anyone else. “Sea Tow Foundation Life Jacket Loaner Stands have loaned more than 26,000 life jackets to recreational boaters at no cost since 2008,” said Kristen Frohnhoefer, a member of the foundation’s board. Where do we start? How do we narrow down 1,300-plus issues spanning a time frame that saw two world wars, a bicentennial and the invention of the Internet, all to uncover the most patriotic page in Yachting’s history? Covers were the most logical place to begin for strong artwork, so we looked through the July issues — all 107 of them published since Yachting premiered in 1907. Issues from World War I yielded a tall ship, two sailboats and what appears to be a ferry. The World War II years are where we found the beauty shown at left: July 1943, practically serenading us with The Star-Spangled Banner. The artwork gracing the wartime cover rings true with pride and elegance even today. Its title is The Lookout, by Teasdale Barney.…
