Felix the Cat is one of the most iconic feline characters in history. Hugely popular during the silent film era, the Felix cartoons represented issues of the time and were praised by critics for capturing a child’s sense of wonder. When television was first being experimented with, Felix was the first test image ever used. The character became a phenomenon in pop culture too with companies adopting Felix as their mascot, including even the US military. The popular feline moved from the silent era into sound too with a revival in the fifties of over 250 episodes. Labour’s Private Renters’ Charter, which includes plans to give tenants the right to own a pet, has been welcomed by Cats Protection. The charity’s head of advocacy, campaigns and Government relations, Madison Rogers, says: “Our research shows there are one million households who would like to own a cat, but cannot because they live in rented accommodation that doesn’t allow pets. Two animal welfare charities have announced a partnership, which they believe will protect affordable care provision for low income pet owners. The initiative between PDSA and the RSPCA comes as a 24 per cent increase in abandoned animals during the first seven months of this year alone was reported by the RSPCA. The agreement affects RSPCA-affiliated owners in London, Birmingham, Manchester and Merthyr Tydfil. The deal will see PDSA take over the running of the Finsbury Park Animal Hospital in North London, where it said it also plans to make “significant” investment. The groups said all current RSPCA-affiliated owners in Birmingham, plus most in Manchester, will be able to access services at PDSA Pet Hospitals from November. A homeless moggy that presented to a rescue charity with injuries commonly seen in patients that have fallen from an excessive height has recovered from his injuries and found a forever home. Five-month-old Bob was handed into Mayhew in the summer, and it was touch and go on whether the ginger feline would survive his injuries, which included a split upper hard palate and a split in the roof of his mouth. Thanks to Mayhew’s expert veterinary care, Bob soon made a full recovery and now, three months on from his injury, has a loving forever home with his new owner, Emma, from London. Blue Cross Exeter has set up a pet food bank to support pet owners in need during the cost of living crisis. The food bank has been set up at the Blue Cross Rehoming and Behaviour Advice Unit on Pynes Hill, Exeter, to support families struggling to feed their beloved pets. Asha Rowlinson, animal welfare assistant at Blue Cross in Exeter said: “We’ve decided to set up a pet food bank service in Exeter as it’s become apparent to us that many people are struggling to afford to pay for their pets’ food. “We all know that the cost of living is rising and, therefore, we wanted to step in to help pets in a way we haven’t done before in the Exeter area.
