More than three quarters (77%) of people say they would rather receive a physical Christmas card to a digital one this year, according to Royal Mail research into card sending trends. Nine out of 10 people surveyed said they send Christmas cards – making it the top Christmas tradition, joint only with giving gifts. A new photography capsule exhibition by Yorkshire-based artist, dog photographer and owner, Daisy May, has just opened at The Kennel Club Art Gallery, showcasing one of the UK’s vulnerable native breeds, the Clumber Spaniel. The collection, which features 12 specially curated images in contrasting settings, celebrates the rich history of the Clumber Spaniel – from carrying out their traditional working activities in modern day field trials, to their role as a family member in the home, and is now open to the public until May 24, 2024 at The Kennel Club in London. With the New Year celebrations just a couple of days away, and plans in place to meet friends that afternoon, the 47-year-old IT worker set off briskly from his home in Northwich, Cheshire, with his family’s German Shorthaired Pointer, Lexi. Clarity As we know, rewarding our dogs after they have done something we wanted and told them to do is the easiest way to ensure that they will follow our instructions next time, and all the times after. Modern training is based on that concept. Old-fashioned ideas still lurk, however, even with some professionals, so we do well to stay aware of what the dog really finds rewarding. After all, the release of a bad experience ending is technically rewarding, but we get much better results – and much happier dogs – if we create a pleasant atmosphere around our training sessions. Q You published a recent question about how often to bathe a dog. But my question is, do I need to bathe my dog at all? I brush him most days. If he gets muddy, I rinse him with a hose - but usually I only need to rinse his legs and tail, rarely his back or head. But if he isn’t muddy, I wouldn’t wash him. I never use shampoo. Is my routine okay? A It really depends on the breed of dog you own. If he is a smooth-coated breed, then what you are doing is absolutely fine. Making sure mud is washed off is important to help remove bacteria or parasites that may be prevalent. Generally, a smooth-coated breed would benefit from bathing and de-shedding during moulting…

Blue Cross pet charity is calling on Defra to release information and access to the ‘exemption portal’ following its announcement of plans to ban XL Bully-type dogs by the end of the year. Owners have been given just 12 weeks to register their dogs and secure an exemption certificate, but the Government has failed to explain and clarify how owners can take action to exempt their pets within the very limited timeframe, and a deadline of February 1, 2024. As the cost of living remains at an all-time high, the Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home has reported a record number of surrender requests, and demand for their support at food banks across East and Central Scotland has increased. The charity’s Winter Appeal is calling out for support to enable them to provide vital aid for animals in need and help people to keep their beloved pets at home this winter. This July, the home received its highest number of surrender requests on record – a staggering 236% increase from October 2022, and between January and August 2023, the Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home rehomed 167 dogs and 81 cats. The Home has also only been able to take in 8.8% of the surrender requests due to the high demand.…

When dogs become adults, they have a total of 42 teeth in their mouths. That’s a lot of teeth! These include different types, each with a special job.
