Gemma Vye adores the pretty 1930s house she lives in with her husband Mark, daughters Sophia, nine, Izabelle, five and cockapoo Peggy in Gloucester – but the hallway was her least favourite space. ‘Sophia was just a baby when we moved in and we had nowhere to store the buggy, bags, coats and shoes. Cara and Andy Baker run a building company, so they weren’t phased by the work needed on their three-bedroom detached 1930s house in Wolverhampton. When they bought it in March 2013 the entire property needed gutting, including the lacklustre hallway. ‘It wasn’t very welcoming,’ remembers Cara, 46. ‘The floorboards were water damaged so it looked a bit dingy and the walls were crumbling.
