Beat the budget When we moved into our new home, we thought the bathroom would need replacing but decided to give it a mini makeover so we could focus on the rest of the house. How do video doorbells work? These allow you to see who’s at the door via your smartphone. When the doorbell rings or the sensor detects movement, you’ll be notified via the app. This enables you to see who’s there and speak to them, even if you’re out. They’re either battery-powered or hard-wired into an existing set-up and can live-stream footage, and save it too. What about smart security cameras? Placed around the home, inside and out, smart cameras connect via your wi-fi. Using the camera’s app on your smartphone, they allow you to watch a live feed, will send alerts if they detect movement while you’re out and some can record footage. When Tilly first came to view this house it had very little character but, ‘it looked pristine, so I thought an initial lick of paint would suffice until I got around to thinking about the long-term décor’ she says. Problems surfaced quickly, however. As they mature, clump-forming perennials make new productive growth on the outside edges of the plant, leaving the middle section to die off. Loosen the clump all the way around with a fork until it can be lifted out of the ground. Use two forks, back to back in the centre, to prise it apart into new useable sections. Use a garden knife or spade if the clump is too solid for forks to penetrate. Lift and plant the new divisions into revitalised soil incorporated with organic matter.…

My tired TV unit seemed like the perfect upcycling project. First, I made sure all the sides of the unit were the same thickness by adding thin MDF. Then I sanded everything, before adding some interest by using wooden half beads. Once the new round feet were added and the unit was painted red, I placed some marble vinyl on the top to balance out the light fabric baskets. This two-bedroom terrace is Nicola and Shaun’s first home together. 3 WAYS WITH… leeks Rich with a sweet onion flavour that adds depth to dishes For a speedy supper, heat some olive oil in a large pan and fry 8 chicken thighs until browned. Add 2 chopped leeks and fry until the chicken is cooked through. Add 1 tbsp mustard and 4 tbsp single cream and stir. Season and simmer until the sauce thickens. Sprinkle over the juice and zest of 1 lemon and 2 tbsp breadcrumbs. Put the pan under a grill until the crumbs brown a little, then serve with greens.
