On 7 February, Mars is located in mid-Libra some three degrees east of Alpha Librae (Zubenelgenubi, magnitude +2.8). Shining at magnitude +0.7, the planet is pretty easy to spot by now, rising at around 1.15am and culminating due south at an altitude of 23 degrees by 6am. Through the telescope, Mars appears as a small orange disc 7.2 arcseconds in diameter, and it shows quite a pronounced phase, as it is 90 per cent illuminated.
